Born in Edo the 15th day of the 3rd lunar month of the 5th year of the Ansei era [3]. Son of Ichikawa Kohanji I, his first stage name was most likely Ichikawa Kyûtarô [2]. Disciple of Ichikawa Sadanji I, he took the name of Ichikawa Kohanji II in 1876 and he was active up to 1918. Date of death unknown.

[1] This haimyô means literally 'bat' (the animal, not the stout and solid stick). Kômori could be the correct reading but we do not exclude that it was henfuku or henpuku. [2] His first stage name was recorded only as Kyûtarô. Did he perform as Ichikawa Kyûtarô or Kanbayashi Kyûtarô? We don't know. [3] The 15th day of the 3rd lunar month of the 5th year of the Ansei era was the 28th of April 1858 in the western calendar. |
