Date of birth unknown. Disciple of Ichikawa Kodanji IV, his stage name was Ichikawa Kohanji I. He was active from 1849 to 1875, which was most likely the year of his death. He was the father of Ichikawa Kohanji II.

Born in Edo the 15th day of the 3rd lunar month of the 5th year of the Ansei era [3]. Son of Ichikawa Kohanji I, his first stage name was most likely Ichikawa Kyûtarô [2]. Disciple of Ichikawa Sadanji I, he took the name of Ichikawa Kohanji II in 1876 and he was active up to 1918. Date of death unknown.

Notes

[1] This haimyô means literally 'bat' (the animal, not the stout and solid stick). Kômori could be the correct reading but we do not exclude that it was henfuku or henpuku.

[2] His first stage name was recorded only as Kyûtarô. Did he perform as Ichikawa Kyûtarô or Kanbayashi Kyûtarô? We don't know.

[3] The 15th day of the 3rd lunar month of the 5th year of the Ansei era was the 28th of April 1858 in the western calendar.
