Career:

Before 1706: born in a family managing a shop called Tanakaya. He started his career as a wakashugata performing under the name of Matsui Sakon. He got married with the daughter of Hoteiya Gonpachi and took the name of Haruyama Genzaburô at unknown times.

1706: he became tachiyaku and took the name of Haruyama Genshichi I.

11th lunar month of 1707: Genshichi played in Ôsaka the role of Nonomiya Sakyô in Azuma Sanpachi's kaomise drama "Onna Daimyô Irekozan".

Fall 1710: Genshichi went to Kyôto.

11th lunar month of 1710: Genshichi played in Kyôto at Kameya Kumenojô's theater the role of Senjûrô in the kaomise drama "Kenkon Daikoku Bashira".

Fall 1711: Genshichi went back to Ôsaka.

11th lunar month of 1711: Genshichi played in Ôsaka the role of the servant Chôsuke in the kaomise drama "Futabashira Aioi Chôja", which was coproduced by Ogino Yaegiri I and Miyazaki Denkichi.

2nd lunar month of 1713: Genshichi went to Edo, where he played at the Moritaza the role of Tanabe Mikinojô in the drama "Isshin Oyako Zakura".

Fall 1713: Genshichi went back to Ôsaka.

11th lunar month of 1713: Genshichi played in Ôsaka the role of Ariwara Isenojô in Azuma Sanpachi's kaomise drama "Onna Fude Yôbunshô", which was produced by Arashi San'emon III and Ogino Yaegiri I.

11th lunar month of 1714: Genshichi played in Ôsaka the role of Utsunomiya Unai in the kaomise drama "Daikoku Shinmai Dawara", which was produced by Anegawa Shinshirô I.

11th lunar month of 1715: Genshichi played in Ôsaka the role of Amanokawa Hanjûrô in the kaomise drama "Seiwa Genji Kaichû Fude", which was produced by Arashi Sanjûrô I.

11th lunar month of 1718: Genshichi played in Ôsaka at the Kita no Shinchi Shibai the role of Nunobiki Kansuke in the kaomise drama "In'yô Inui no Machi-zukuri".

1st lunar month of 1719: Genshichi's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was jô-jô-(shiro)hankichi (superior - superior - (white) half excellent) [visual].

Fall 1719: Genshichi went to Kyôto.

11th lunar month of 1719: Genshichi played in Kyôto at Miyako Mandayû's theater the role of Naniwa Kuraemon in Sadoshima Saburôzaemon's kaomise drama "Shôjô Zakaya Mannen-gura".

1st lunar month of 1720: Genshichi's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was jô-jô-(shiro)hankichi (superior - superior - (white) half excellent) [visual]. Genshichi performed in the same theater in the ni-no-kawari drama "Keisei Hachimannichi".

Summer 1720: Genshichi played in the same theater the role of the karô Senzaemon in the drama "Yamato Hôryûji Eguchi no Mikage". This was his last recorded performance in ôshibai; no record afterwards.

Comments:

Haruyama Genshichi I was a tachiyaku actor, who made a short career in Ôsaka and Kyôto (with a short stay in Edo) during the first quarter of the 18th century. He was good in aragoto, jitsugoto and nuregoto. He was also an outstanding dancer. He unfortunately died too young.
