Ichikawa Enjaku I

The actor Ichikawa Sh˘ch˘ II held the name of Ichikawa Enjaku I from September 1906 to December 1911.

Born the 16th of November 1901. Disciple of Ichikawa Ensh˘ II, he received the name of Ichikawa Tsutamaru and started his career in March 1905 at the Meijiza, where he performed in "Terakoya". Later, he became a disciple of Ichikawa Sh˘ch˘ II. He became nadai and took the name of Ichikawa Enjaku II in September 1922 at the Meijiza, where he played the roles of T˘zaemon's daughter Ohaya and the female kamiyui Omatsu in "Tsuri Tenj˘" and "Nazo no Obi Chotto Tokubŕ". He appeared on stage for the last time in June 1966, in T˘ky˘ at the Kabukiza, where he performed in the drama "Sushiya". He died the 2nd of November 1967. This supporting onnagata actor was said to be an expert on Kabuki with a humorous personality. He was loved and appreciated by all backstage.
