Sôryô Jinroku I

Date of birth unknown. He was the son of the puppeteer Tatsumatsu Jûzaburô and the brother of the star Iwai Hanshirô IV. Disciple of Matsumoto Kôshirô II, his first stage name was Matsumoto Jin'emon [1]. He was recorded for the first time in the 11th lunar month of 1754, in Edo at the Nakamuraza, where he performed in the kaomise drama "Miura no Ôsuke Bumon no Kotobuki" which celebrated the shûmei of Ichikawa Danjûrô IV, Matsumoto Kôshirô III and Tsuuchi Monzaburô II. He took the name of Matsumoto Yazaemon [1] in 1759. Then, he took the name of Sôryô Jinroku I in the 11th lunar month of 1765 in Edo at the Nakamuraza, where he performed as a dôkegata in the kaomise drama "Kagura Uta Amagoi Komachi" which also celebrated the shûmei of his brother Iwai Hanshirô IV. He was active in ôshibai up to the following year. This dôkegata actor died while on tour in the Northern Provinces of Japan the 7th day of the 2nd lunar month of 1780 [2].

Sôryô Jinroku II
 

The actor Sôryô Jinroku II held this name from the 11th lunar month of 1816 to the 8th lunar month of 1837.

Sôryô Jinroku III

Date of birth and death unknown. Disciple of Sôryô Jinroku II, his first stage name was Sôryô Kanpachi. He took the name of Sôryô Jinroku III in the 11th lunar month of 1838. He was like his master a dôkegata and handôgataki actor. He was active up to 1841.

Notes

[1] It was reported in Nojima Jusaburô's book "Kabuki Jinmei Jiten" that he was initially a disciple of Nakamura Kanzaburô VII and that his first stage name was Nakamura Kanpachi. Same in the Ritsumeikan University Actors Database. It was reported in the latest edition (2012) of "Kabuki Haiyû Meiseki Benran" that he was a disciple of Ichikawa Danjûrô IV and that his first stage names were Matsumoto Jin'emon and Matsumoto Yazaemon.

[2] The 7th day of the 2nd lunar month of the 9th year of the An'ei era was the 12th of March 1780 in the western calendar. It was also said that he died not the 7th day but the 2nd, which was the 7th of March 1780 in the western calendar. It was also reported that he died the 21st day of the 10th lunar month of the 1st year of the Tenmei era, which was the 6th of December 1781 in the western calendar.
