Born in 1910 in the city of Tenryû in Shizuoka Prefecture.
He started his career in October 1921
in Tenryû at the Hanaoka Gekijô, where he played the role of Shinobu in the drama "Benkei Jôshi".
His first stage name was Azuma Eizaburô. He became disciple of Matsumoto Kingo II in 1924 or 1925
and received the name of Matsumoto Kyôya. He took the name of Matsumoto Kyônosuke in January 1933. He settled in Kansai around that time.
With the help of Nakamura Tomijûrô IV, he became a disciple of Kataoka Nizaemon XIII and received the name of Kataoka Matsunojô I in March 1952.
He became nadai in 1954.
He was promoted to the second league of actors (junkanbu shôshin) in September 1959.
He appeared on stage for the last time in June 1980, in Ôsaka at the Nakaza,
where he played the role of the nakai Oyuki in the drama "Toribeyama Shinjû".
He died the 11th of August 1980.

Disciple of Kataoka Nizaemon XIII from May 1964, his first stage name was Kataoka Hideju and he made his debut on stage in June 1964
at the Kabukiza, performing in the drama "Hachidaime Ichikawa Danjûrô".
He became nadai and took the name of Kataoka Matsunojô II in May 1998 at the Shôchikuza,
where his second master Kataoka Nizaemon XV celebrated his shûmei in Ôsaka.
He appeared on stage for the last time in December 2013, in Tôkyô at the Kabukiza,
where he played the roles of the koshimoto Kaede and the nakai Omatsu in the classic "Kanadehon Chûshingura".
Victim of a brainstem infarction, this onnagata supporting actor died the 11th of July 2014.
