Career:

Before 1740: date of birth unknown. Disciple of Nakamura Jûzô I, he received the stage name of Nakamura Sanza and he started to perform as a katakiyaku in Ôsaka from 1739.

Fall 1740: he went to Kyôto.

11th lunar month of 1740: he took the name of Kataoka Danzô, performing in the kaomise drama "Asuka Miyako Jindai no Maki", which was produced by Nakamura Kumetarô I for the nadai Miyako Mandayû.

11th lunar month of 1742: he took the name of Nakamura Danzô in Kyôto at the Minamigawa no Shibai, playing the role of Daimojiya Shibaemon in the kaomise drama "Kaeribana Konrei Nagoya" which was produced by Nakamura Kumetarô I.

11th lunar month of 1759: he took the name of Kataoka Manbê in Kyôto at the Minamigawa no Shibai, performing in the kaomise drama "Hônen no Miyako Mutsuki no Kotobuki" which was produced by Sawamura Kunitarô I and celebrated the shûmei of Nakamura Kichiemon I, Nakamura Jûzô II and Matsuya Shinjûrô.

11th lunar month of 1760: he took the name of Nakamura Manbê in Kyôto at the Kitagawa no Shibai, playing the role of Ishidô Kenmotsu in the kaomise drama "Kiku Nagashi Kokka Taiheiki" which was produced by his son Nakamura Senzô.

11th lunar month of 1761: he took back the name of Nakamura Danzô in Kyôto at the Minamigawa no Shibai, playing the roles of the hinin Gonji and Toshiemon's wife Onoe in the kaomise drama "Hitomaru Banzei no Utena" which was produced by Sawamura Kunitarô I.

Fall 1765: Danzô went back to Ôsaka, after 14 seasons spent in Kyôto.

11th lunar month of 1765: Danzô played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Danjô Saemon, in reality Noto-no-Kami Noritsune, in the kaomise drama "Ôzatsuki Shuen no Kachidoki" [1], which was produced by Mimasu Daigorô I and Nakamura Utaemon I.

Fall 1772: Danzô went back to Kyôto.

11th lunar month of 1772: Danzô played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the role of Mifune Tsunaemon in the kaomise drama "Ôsaka Zaiku Araki no Mokuzô", which was produced by Yoshizawa Iroha I.

1st lunar month of 1773: Danzô's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, katakiyaku section, was jô-jô-hankichi (superior - superior - half excellent) [visual]. No record afterwards.

Comments:

Nakamura Danzô was a Kamigata katakiyaku actor, who was active in Ôsaka or Kyôto from the end of the 1730s to the first half of the 1770.
