Date of birth unknown. He started his career in Kamigata in 1825. His first master was Nakamura Tsurusuke II. His second master was Nakamura Tamashichi I during the 1850s. He was quite popular in Ôsaka or Kyôto during the 1860s: his ranking in the Kamigata hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, from 1862 to 1866 was jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent) and he was often kanjiku for onnagata actors. Many yakushae depicting him were created during the peak of his fame. However, his career was somehow quite mysterious and not well-recorded. He retired in 1884 and died in 1885. It is quite difficult to confirm whether or not the actor, who started acting, was the same as the one who died in 1885. There is an assumption that the actor who died in 1885 was in fact an actor named Nakamura Sentarô, who took the name of Nakamura Sennosuke during the Meiji era. Nojima Jusaburô in his precious reference book "Kabuki Jinmei Jiten" wrote that Nakamura Keijo, who was a disciple of Nakamura Tomijûrô II, held the name of Nakamura Sennosuke between the second half of the 1840s and 1869. In "Kabuki Haiyû Meiseki Benran", Nakamura Keijo's stage names were Kanô Fukusuke (end of the Kaei era), Onoe Taminojô (from 1859 to 1866) and Nakamura Daikichi IV (from 1866 to 1869) ... but never Nakamura Sennosuke. Who is right? Who is wrong? It is very difficult to clarify the things. We can easily assume that most likely 2 or 3 actors held this name between 1825 and 1885. |
