He was named Kinsaburô when he was a child. 1868: he became a disciple of Ichikawa Ichijûrô II and received the name of Ichikawa Fukutarô II. 1870s: he received the patronage of Onoe Tamizô II in Kamigata and of Kawarasaki Sanshô in Tôkyô, where he stayed in 1873/1874. October 1874: Ichikawa Fukutarô II took the name of Ichikawa Ichijûrô III at the Chikugo no Shibai, where he played the role of Hikiroku in the drama "Ataridoshi Satomi no Hanjô". Fall 1879: Ichijûrô went to Tôkyô. Fall 1880: Ichijûrô went back to Ôsaka to play at the Naka no Shibai the roles of Igami no Gonta and Yokawa no Kakuhan in the classic "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura". May 1888: Ichijûrô went to Tôkyô with his son Ichikawa Ichitarô to perform at the Harukiza. February 1889: Ichijûrô went back in Ôsaka to play at the Asahiza the role of Mitsuhide in the drama "Tamamo-no-Mae Asahi no Tamoto". May 1910: Ichikawa Ichijûrô III and his son Ichikawa Dankichi II took the respectives names of Ichikawa Gangyoku II and Ichikawa Ichijûrô IV. April 1919: Gangyoku appeared on stage for the last time in Ôsaka at the Nakaza, where he played the role of Ishikawa Goemon in the drama "Sanmon"; the role of Mashiba Hisayoshi was played by Jitsukawa Enjaku II. 22 February 1920: Gangyoku died.
