Career:

1669 ~ 1699: born in Edo. Disciple of Nakamura Shichisaburô I, his first stage name as a koyaku actor was Takii Sanza. Later, he became wakashugata.

11th lunar month of 1699: he took the name of Takii Sukegorô, performing at the Nakamuraza in the kaomise drama "Taira no Kiyomori Bijin Zoroi".

1st lunar month of 1701: he became tachiyaku.

3rd lunar month of 1701: Sukegorô played in the same theater the role of Tamura Tôshichi in the sumidagawamono "Shusse Sumidagawa".

11th lunar month of 1702: he became disciple of Ichikawa Danjûrô I and received the name of Ichikawa Sukejûrô I.

19th day of the 2nd lunar month of 1704 [2]: his second master Ichikawa Danjûrô I died.

1st lunar month of 1705: he became dôkegata at the Ichimuraza.

Fall 1706: Sukejûrô went to Ôsaka.

11th lunar month of 1706: Sukejûrô became tachiyaku and performed in Ôsaka in the kaomise drama "Kantô Koroku"; his main stage partners were Shinozuka Jirozaemon I (zamoto), Otowa Jirosaburô I, Hyakunin'isshu Genzaburô, Bandô Kikumatsu I, Hanai Azuma and Onogawa Orie.

3rd day of the 2nd lunar month of 1708 [3]: his first master Nakamura Shichisaburô I died.

1st lunar month of 1709: Sukejûrô went back to Edo; he performed at the Ichimuraza in the new year sogamono drama "Meiseki Soga".

11th lunar month of 1709: he took the name of Mimasuya Sukejûrô I at the Ichimuraza, performing in the kaomise drama "Genpuku Nue Yorimasa".

11th lunar month of 1710: Sukejûrô played at the Ichimuraza and played the role of Watari Shinzaemon in the kaomise drama "Shusse Taiheiki", which celebrated the shûmei of Takii Hanshirô and welcomed in Edo the Kamigata actor Kirinami Takie.

3rd lunar month of 1711: Sukejûrô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was (superior) [visual].

11th lunar month of 1714: Sukejûrô played at the Ichimuraza the role of Shigi no Saemon in the kaomise drama "Enman Taiheiki", which welcomed in Edo the actor Wakabayashi Shirogorô; his main stage partners were Ichikawa Danzô I, Ichimura Takenojô IV, Asao Jûjirô I, Matsumoto Koshirô, Hayakawa Dengorô and Yamashita Karumo.

2nd lunar month of 1715: Sukejûrô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was jô-jô (superior - superior) [visual].

11th lunar month of 1717: Sukejûrô played at the Ichimuraza the role of Mitsutô in the kaomise drama "Kinkazan Yoroi Biraki".

11th lunar month of 1718: Sukejûrô played at the Ichimuraza the role of Sano Genzaemon Tsuneyo in the kaomise drama "Gozen Nô Mitsu Uroko", which celebrated the arrival in Edo of the Kamigata actor Onoe Samon; Sukejûrô's others main stage partners were Ogawa Zengorô I, Sanjô Kantarô II, Ôtani Hiroji I, Ichimura Takenojô IV, Sodeoka Masanosuke II, Ôkuma Utaemon, Nakajima Mihoemon I and Onogawa Orie.

1st lunar month of 1719: Sukejûrô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) [visual].

11th lunar month of 1719: Sukejûrô performed at the Moritaza in the kaomise drama "Banmin Taiheiki".

1st lunar month of 1720: Sukejûrô played in the same theater the role of Soga Jûrô Sukenari in the new year sogamono drama "Yuzuriha Kongen Soga", which commemorated the 16th anniversary (17th memorial service) of the passing away of his second master Ichikawa Danjûrô I; the roles of Soga Gorô Tokimune and Kudô Saemon Suketsune were played by Ichikawa Danjûrô II and Ogawa Zengorô I.

11th lunar month of 1720: Sukejûrô played at the Moritaza the role of the shitennô Urabe Suetake in the kaomise drama "Kaigô Sakiwake Shitennô".

1st lunar month of 1719: Sukejûrô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was jô-jô-(hanshiro)kichi (superior - superior - (half-white) excellent) [visual]. Sukejûrô played in the same theater the role of Soga Jûrô Sukenari in the new year sogamono drama "Nigiwai Suehiro Soga"; the roles of Soga Gorô Tokimune and Kudô Saemon Suketsune were played by Ichikawa Danjûrô II and Ogawa Zengorô I.

11th lunar month of 1722: Sukejûrô performed at the Nakamuraza in the kaomise drama "Hônen Taiheiki".

1st lunar month of 1723: Sukejûrô played at the Nakamuraza the role of Soga Jûrô Sukenari in the new year drama "Soga Koyomi Biraki"; the roles of Soga Gorô Tokimune and Kudô Saemon Suketsune were played by Ichikawa Danjûrô II and Ogawa Zengorô I.

11th lunar month of 1723: Sukejûrô played at the Nakamuraza the role of Harada Imajirô in the kaomise drama "Sono Enpô Onna Migyôsho", which celebrated the arrival at the Nakamuraza of the Kamigata actors Yamashita Kinsaku I and Sanogawa Senzô.

11th lunar month of 1724: Sukejûrô played at the Ichimuraza the role of the hyôbanshi Hyôsuke in the kaomise drama "Bankoku Taiheiki", which welcomed in Edo the Kamigata actor Matsushima Hyôtarô; his stage partners were Ichikawa Danzô I, Tomizawa Hanzaburô I, Ogino Izaburô I, Nakamura Kichibê I, Ogawa Zengorô I, Sodesaki Miwano I, Fujimura Handayû II, Nakajima Mihoemon I, Kamakura Chôkurô II and his son Ichikawa Suketarô. This was Sukejûrô's last appearance on stage.

26th day of the 3rd lunar month of 1725 [1]: Sukejûrô died in Edo.

Comments:

Mimasuya Sukejûrô I was a popular and talented Edo tachiyaku actor, who achieved fame for himself from the beginning of the 1710s to the middle of the 1720s. He was dôkegata for a little while and succeeded in keeping some dôkegata flavour in the tachiyaku roles which he performed. He was outstanding in wagoto and yatsushigoto. One of his best roles in the 1720s was Soga Jûrô Sukenari in the new year sogamono.
