Career:

1703 ~ 1721: born in Ise. He started his career in Kyôto as a disciple of the actor Ogino Yaegiri I, who gave him the name of Ogino Izaburô I and trained him to perform koyaku roles.

11th lunar month of 1722: Izaburô played in Kyôto at Hoteiya Umenojô's theater the role of Tomimaru in Yoshida Rôfu's kaomise drama "Aioi Ôshimadai", which was produced by his master Ogino Yaegiri I and welcomed in Kyôto the actor Kirinoya Gonjûrô I.

1723: Izaburô settled in Edo to perform at the Ichimuraza.

11th lunar month of 1723: Izaburô became wakashugata and played at the Ichimuraza the role of Watanabe Genji Tsuna in the kaomise drama "Hinagata Shuten Dôji".

11th lunar month of 1736: Izaburô moved to the Nakamuraza and performed in the kaomise drama "Kuni no Tomi Sesshôseki"; his stage partners were Ôtani Hiroji I, Segawa Kikunojô I, Segawa Kikujirô I, Nakajima Mihoemon I, Arashi Otohachi I, Narumi Goroshirô I, Hayakawa Denshirô, Nakamura Kichibê I and Kameya Jûjirô (who arrives from Kamigata).

11th lunar month of 1746: Izaburô played at the Ichimuraza in the kaomise drama "Aioi Izu Nikki", which welcomed in Edo the actors Yamamoto Kyôshirô I and Iwai Hanshirô III.

1st lunar month of 1747: Izaburô played in the same theater the role of Yaoya Oshichi in the new year sogamono drama "Tamakushige Yosooi Soga".

3rd lunar month of 1747: the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami" was performed for the first time in Edo, at the Ichimuraza; Izaburô played the role of Takebe Genzô [casting].

25th day of the 5th lunar month of 1747 [2]: his father-in-law Ôtani Hiroji I died.

Summer 1747: Izaburô fell ill and had to stop acting.

6th day of the 2nd lunar month of 1748 [1]: Izaburô died in Edo.

Comments:

Ogino Izaburô I was a talented actor, who started his career in Kyôto but moved to Edo at the age of 20 and became a popular wakashugata and wakaonnagata actor. He turned to tachiyaku roles from 1738 and was able to perform roles in the opposite styles of aragoto and wagoto. He also excelled in budôgoto roles. One of his best roles was Soga Gorô Tokimune in the new year sogamono dramas.
