Career:

1812: born in Ôsaka. He started his career as a disciple of Arashi Kichisaburô II, who gave him the name of Arashi Ichitarô I.

26th day of the 9th lunar month of 1821 [2]: his master Arashi Kitsusaburô I died. Ichitarô became disciple of Arashi Kitsusaburô II.

1823 ~ 1831: he took the name of Arashi Yoshisaburô II at an unknown date and spent most of his time in travelling troupes performing in the precincts of temples and shrines in the Kyôto area (miyaji shibai).

11th lunar month of 1831: Arashi Yoshisaburô II took the name of Arashi Rikaku II in Kyôto. Rikaku was Arashi Rikan II's haimyô.

6th lunar month of 1836: tour in Miyajima with Arashi Rikan II, Arashi Kichisaburô III, Nakamura Karoku I and Asao Kuzaemon II.

13th day of the 6th lunar month of 1837 [3]: his master Arashi Rikan II died.

1st lunar month of 1839: premiere at the Kado no Shibai of Nishizawa Ippô's drama "Keisei Hama no Masago"; Rikaku played the roles of Mashiba Hisaaki and Horio Tatewaki [casting].

3rd lunar month of 1839: the play "Sesshû Gappô-ga-Tsuji" was staged for the first time in Ôsaka, at the Kado no Shibai; Rikaku played the role of the yakko Irihei [casting].

6th lunar month of 1840: Rikaku played the role of Fujiwara Naritsune at the Sakai Shinchi no Shibai (Ôsaka) in the drama "Heike Nyogo no Shima"; his stage partners were Fujikawa Kayû III (Chidori), Nakamura Shikan III (Tanzaemon Motoyasu) and Ichikawa Danzô V (Shunkan).

11th lunar month of 1843: Rikaku played the role of Shizuka Gozen in the michiyuki "Yoshinoyama" and the "Shi-no-Kiri" scene of the classic "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura", which was produced by Ichikawa Suketarô at the Chikugo no Shibai; the roles of the fox Genkurô and Yoshitsune were played by Nakamura Shikan III and Mimasu Tanin IV.

5th lunar month of 1844: Rikaku played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the role of Fujiya Izaemon in the drama "Kuruwa Bunshô"; the role of the courtesan Yûgiri was played by Fujikawa Kayû III. Rikaku also played the roles of Satô Tadanobu, the fox Genkurô and Kajiwara Kagetoki in the classic "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura".

7th lunar month of 1844: Rikaku played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Sanza in the drama "Keisei Shina Sadame".

3rd lunar month of 1845: Rikaku played at the Chikugo no Shibai the role of Yasuke in the drama "Ehon Tengajaya-mura"; his stage partners were Nakamura Shibazô I (Motoemon), Kataoka Ichizô I (Tôma Saburôemon), Sawamura Kitô II (Somenoi) and Nakamura Shikan III (Iori).

2nd lunar month of 1847: Rikaku played at the Kado no Shibai the role of Shizuka Gozen in the michiyuki "Yoshinoyama" and the "Shi-no-Kiri" scene of the classic "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura"; his stage partners were Ichikawa Ebizô V (Yoshitsune), Ichikawa Kodanji IV (Tadanobu) and Arashi Kichisaburô III (Yokawa no Zenji Kakuhan).

5th lunar month of 1847: Rikaku played at the Kitagawa no Shibai the role of Shizuka Gozen in Kyôto in the drama "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura", which was produced by Kameya Kumenojô and and Hayagumo Chôdayû; his stage partners were Ichikawa Ebizô V (Yoshitsune) and Ichikawa Kodanji IV (Tadanobu).

1st lunar month of 1848: Rikaku's rank in the Kamigata hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent) [visual].

11th lunar month of 1849: tour in Nagoya; he performed at the Tachibana no Shibai, playing the roles of Yasuke and Tadanobu in the "Sushiya" and "Yoshinoyama" scenes of the drama "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura"; the roles of Osato and Shizuka Gozen were played by Nakamura Tomijûrô II.

1st lunar month of 1850: Rikaku achieved a great success at the Chikugo no Shibai by playing 4 roles in the drama "Keisei Hana Ikada".

11th lunar month of 1850: Rikaku played at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Sukune Tarô, Sakuramaru and Takebe Genzô ("Terakoya") in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami".

3rd lunar month of 1851: Rikaku played at the Sakai Shinchi no Shibai (Ôsaka) the roles of Momonoi Wakasanosuke, Hayano Kanpei and Kanzaki Yagorô in the classic "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

11th lunar month of 1851: Rikaku played at the Kitagawa no Shibai the role of Abe no Munetô in the drama "Ôshû Adachi-ga-Hara", which was produced by Kameya Kumenojô and Hayagumo Chôdayû; his stage partners were Nakamura Tomijûrô II (Sodehagi), Kataoka Ichizô I (Abe no Sadatô) and Jitsukawa Enzaburô I (Hachiman Tarô).

8th lunar month of 1852: premiere at the Chikugo no Shibai of the dance "Ayatsuri Sanbasô"; the role of Sanbasô was performed by Rikaku.

2nd lunar month of 1853: Rikaku settled in Edo; premiere at the Kawarasakiza of Kawatake Shinshichi II's drama "Shiranui Monogatari", which was based on Ryûkatei Tanekazu's long novel of the same title [more details]; Rikaku played the roles of Hanano-mura no Chigusa, Toriyama Akisaku, Washizu Rokurô and Hyakumanako no Yonekichi. Rikaku achieved a great success at the Kawarasakiza by performing in the dance "Yanagi no Ito Hikuya Gohiiki", sharing the stage with Bandô Shûka I and Bandô Takesaburô I.

4th lunar month of 1853: Rikaku played in the same theater the roles of Tadanobu and the fox Genkurô in the "Shi-no-Kiri" scene of the classic "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura"; his stage partners were Bandô Shûka I (Shizuka Gozen), Bandô Takesaburô I (Yoshitsune) and Arashi Rikan III (Yokawa no Zenji Kakuhan).

11th lunar month of 1853: Rikaku achieved a great success in the same theater by playing the roles of Ushiwakamaru and Oniwakamaru in the classic "Kiichi Hôgen Sanryaku no Maki".

Spring 1854: Rikaku went back to Ôsaka; he played at the Chikugo no Shibai the roles of Sukune Tarô, Jûsaku and the spirit of a white fox in the drama "Tenmangû".

5th lunar month of 1854: Rikaku played in the same theater the role of Senoo Tarô in the drama "Heike Nyogo no Shima"; his stage partners were Nakamura Tamashichi I (Chidori) and Ichikawa Danzô VI (Shunkan).

11th lunar month of 1854: Rikaku played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the role of the thief Nippon Daemon in the drama "Koi no Shiranami".

2nd lunar month of 1855: Rikaku played the roles of Satô Tadanobu, the fox Genkurô, Kokingo and Kajiwara Kagetoki in the classic "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura", which was produced by the zamoto Arashi Kitsunosuke at the Chikugo no Shibai; his stage partners were Arashi San'emon IX (Shizuka Gozen) and Ichikawa Ebijûrô IV (Tokaiya Ginpei, Taira no Tomomori, Igami no Gonta and Yokawa no Zenji Kakuhan).

1st lunar month of 1856: Rikaku played in the same theater the role of Matahei in the drama "Keisei Hangonkô"; the role of Otoku was played by Arashi Ritô.

1st lunar month of 1859: Rikaku's rank in the Kamigata hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was itaru-jô-jô-kichi (unique - superior - superior - excellent).

10th lunar month of 1859: Rikaku plays for the last time the role of Shizuka Gozen iin the michiyuki "Yoshinoyama" and the "Shi-no-Kiri" scene of the classic "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura", which was produced at the Kado no Shibai (Ôsaka) by the zamoto Nakamura Takemaru; his stage partners were Mimasu Baisha I (Yoshitsune, Yokawa no Zenji Kakuhan) and Onoe Tamizô II (Tadanobu).

8th lunar month of 1860: Rikaku played at the Chikugo no Shibai the roles of Oiwa, Kohei and Satô Yomoshichi in Tsuruya Nanboku IV's drama "Tôkaidô Yotsuya Kaidan".

1st lunar month of 1861: Rikaku's rank in the Kamigata hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was (shiro)ô-jô-jô-kichi (almost grand - superior - superior - excellent). He was also the kanjiku for tachiyaku actors.

11th lunar month of 1861: Rikaku played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the roles of Jihizô, Katsuyori and Minosaku in the drama "Honchô Nijûshikô".

14th day of the 7th lunar month of 1864 [1]: Rikaku died in Ôsaka.

Comments:

Arashi Rikaku II was a talented Kamigata actor, able to play almost any kind of tachiyaku roles, either in jidaimono or sewamono dramas. He also performed occasionally onnagata roles and his best one was Shizuka Gozen in the classic "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura". He was an amazing dancer and excelled in hengemono dances. He popularized in Edo the dance "Ayatsuri Sanbasô", which was still nowadays somehow associated to Kamigata.
