Career: 1688: he started his career in Edo as a disciple of Matsumoto Kozarashi, who gave him the name of Matsumoto Sakuya and trained him as a wakashugata. Later on, he took the name of Matsumoto Shirosaburô. 1694: Shirosaburô became tachiyaku. 1707: Shirosaburô became oyajigata. He also worked as a tôdori at the Moritaza. 11th lunar month of 1707: Shirosaburô played at the Moritaza the role of Ono no Yoshizane in the kaomise drama "Kankatsu Kayoi Komachi". 3rd lunar month of 1709: Shirosaburô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, oyajigata section, was jô-jô (superior - superior) [visual]. He shared this rank with Ôkuma Utaemon and Kamakura Chôkurô I. 11th lunar month of 1709: Shirosaburô played at the Moritaza in the kaomise drama "Tametomo Furiwakegami", which welcomed in Edo the Ôsaka actors Hisamatsu Tasanta and Iwai Tamanoe. The others actors were Tomizawa Hanzaburô I, Sakurayama Shirosaburô I, Takii Hannosuke, Narukawa Genzaemon, Shirosaburô's son Ichikawa Danzô I and Saruwaka Sanzaemon II. 3rd lunar month of 1710: Shirosaburô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, oyajigata section, was jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) [visual]. 11th lunar month of 1710: Shirosaburô played at the Moritaza in the kaomise drama "Onna Tsuwamono Tokiwa no Matsu"; his stage partners were Shinomiya Genpachi, Hayakawa Dengorô, Takahashi Motojirô, Tsutsui Kichijûrô I, Hisamatsu Tasanta, Saigoku Hyôsuke, Yasuda Kichirôji, Narukawa Genzaemon, Shirosaburô's son Ichikawa Danzô I, Saruwaka Sanzaemon II and Fujioka Daikichi. 1st lunar month of 1711: Shirosaburô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, oyajigata section, was jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent) [visual]. 2nd lunar month of 1713: Shirosaburô was expected to perform at the Moritaza but he suddenly fell ill. His name did not appear anymore in any Edo banzuke. The year of his death was unknown. Comments: Matsumoto Shirosaburô was a mainstay of the Moritaza, where he successfully acted as an oyajigata and worked as a tôdori at the beginning of the 18th century. |
