History

Tsuruya Nanboku IV's kaomise drama "Shitennô Ubuyu no Tamagawa" was premiered in the 11th lunar month of 1818 [3] at the Tamagawaza [casting]. Two dance-drama were staged within this kaomise program: the Tomimoto-based dance "Yama Mata Yama Oyozume Banashi" and the Nagauta-based dance "Migawari".

[1] Shôriya Aragorô's awkward translation: the four guardians (shitennô) and the rebirth (ubuyu being the first bath of a newborn baby) of the Tamagawaza (which celebrated its reopening in Fall 1818 with this kaomise program).

[2] The others sakusha were Segawa Jokô II, Mimasuya Nisôji, Matsui Yûsuke II, Katsui Genpachi, Katsu Hyôsuke, Terashima Gosuke, Matsuchi Shôkichi, Hanagasa Rosuke and Iozaki Kyûsuke.

[3] The opening day was the 1st day of the 11th lunar month of the 1st year of the Bunsei era, which was the 28th of November 1818 in the western calendar.

The actors Ichikawa Danjûrô VII and Segawa Kikunojô V playing the roles of Sakata Shumenojô Kintoki and the yamanba in the dance-drama "Yama Mata Yama Oyozume Banashi" of the kaomise drama "Shitennô Ubuyu no Tamagawa", which was staged in the 11th lunar month of 1818 at the Tamagawaza (print made by Utagawa Kunisada I)
