Tamenaga Tarobŕ I

Dates of birth and death unknown. Disciple of Takeda Izumo, he started his career in 1737 in the puppet theater in ďsaka at the Takemotoza. He took the name of Tamenaga Tarobŕ I in 1740. He switched to Kabuki in 1748 and took the name of Tamenaga Sench˘. He worked in the 3rd lunar month of 1748 in ďsaka at the Naka no Shibai, along with Matsuya Raisuke I and Takeda Bunz˘, on the drama "T˘kaid˘ Kosute Ume", which was produced by Ichikawa Ryűz˘. He worked in the 7th lunar month of 1751, at the service of the tatesakusha Namiki Sh˘z˘ I, in ďsaka at the Kado no Shibai on the summer drama "Sannin Gumi Somenuki Moy˘", which was produced by Nakamura Utaemon I. He worked in the same theater in the 8th lunar month of 1851 on the kiri ky˘gen "Amayadori Kurenai no Hanagoza". No record afterwards. He was the master of Tamenaga Heisaku, Tamenaga Icch˘, Takeda Nis˘ji, Tamekawa S˘suke and Tamenaga Tarobŕ II [1].

Dates of birth and death unknown. Reported as a disciple of Tamenaga Sench˘ [1], he was reported for the first time in Fall 1807, when he worked at the Kawarasakiza in the 11th lunar month of 1807 on the kaomise drama "Bandai Fueki Shibai no Hajimari" [2]. He was recorded for the last time in 1842. No record afterwards for this minor sakusha.

[1] It was reported in Nojima Jusabur˘'s book "Kabuki Jinmei Jiten" that Tamenaga Tarobŕ II was a disciple of Tamenaga Sench˘. Was he really ? The former sakusha started to work at the end of the 1800s while the latter sakusha disappeared from the theater playbill at the beginning of the 1750s. More than 50 years between the end and the beginning of the two careers.

[2] The tatesakusha was Namiki Gohei I. The others sakusha were Shinoda Kinji I, Tagawa Sh˘saku, Sone Sh˘kichi I and Matsukawa Tanji.
