Career:

June 1954: he makes his first appearance on stage at the Kabukiza, receiving the name of Onoe Rokuya and playing in the dramas "Genji Monogatari" and "Nanbanji Monzen".

May 1971: Onoe Rokuya takes the name of Onoe Shôkaku II at the Kabukiza, playing the roles of Yodarekuri Yotarô and the guard Tônai in the dramas "Terakoya" and "Tsuchi-gumo", which are staged to commemorate the 22nd anniversary (23rd memorial service) of late Onoe Kikugorô VI.

January 1980: revival at the National Theatre of Tsuruya Nanboku IV's kaomise drama "Modoribashi Sena-ni Gohiiki" [more details]; Shôkaku plays the role of Monobe Heita Arikuni.

March 1981: revival at the National Theatre of Kawatake Mokuami's drama "Jitsugetsusei Kyôwa Seidan"; Shôkaku plays the role of Tanroku [casting].

January 1984: historic revival at the National Theatre of the play "Sankai Nagoya"; Shôkaku plays the role du page Sakuramaru [casting].

January 1985: revival at the National Theatre of the drama "Kan U", which belongs to the Kabuki Jûhachiban; Shôkaku plays the role of Yokose Shichirô, later the kagokaki Rokuzô [casting].

Summer 1985: tour in the USA; Shôkaku plays the roles of Tônai and Usui Sadamitsu in "Tachi Nusubito" and "Tsuchi-gumo", which celebrate the shûmei in the USA of Ichikawa Danjûrô XII [more details].

May 1990: Onoe Shôkaku II takes the name of Onoe Matsusuke VI at the Kabukiza, playing the roles of Ashida Gunsuke, Gorozô and Arajishi Otokonosuke in the dramas "Yoshinobu Inochi Goi", "Gosho no Gorozô" and "Meiboku Sendai Hagi".

March 1991: revival at the National Theatre of Namiki Gohei I's play "Sode Nikki Banshû Meguri"; Matsusuke plays the role of Innami Daizô [more details].

March 2001: Matsusuke plays at the Shinbashi Enbujô the role of Genroku in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura", which is staged by the Onoe Kikugorô Gekidan to commemorate the 12th anniversary (13th memorial service) and the 6th anniversary (7th memorial service) of the deaths of late Onoe Shôroku II and Onoe Baikô VII.

January 2002: the National Theatre produces the revival of Kawatake Shinshichi II's drama "Koharu Nagi Okitsu Shiranami", which has not been played in its full length since 11th lunar month of 1864. Matsusuke plays the roles of Otsume (owner of the Miuraya bordello), Miyuki and the yakko Hayasuke [casting].

November 2005: Matsusuke appears on stage for the last time, at the Shinbashi Enbujô, playing the role of Senso Dôjin in the drama "Jiraiya Gôketsu Monogatari".

26 December 2005: Matsusuke dies in Tôkyô at the National Cancer Center.

Onoe Matsusuke VI was an outstanding supporting tachiyaku of the Otowaya guild.

Onoe Matsusuke VI's best roles: Tarôkaja ("Migawari Zazen"), the man of the world ("Sukeroku"), Tanbaya Hachiemon ("Fûin Giri") and Sankichi ("Sakanaya Sôgorô").
