Date of birth unknown. Disciple of the Tsuruya clan, he was recorded for the first time in 1736. He first name was Nanboku Magotarô III. He was a tôdori at the Ichimuraza and never performed on stage. He became the son-in-law of Tsuruya Nanboku II and took the name of Tsuruya Nanboku III in 1763. His daughter Okichi became the wife of Sawa Hyôzô (the future Tsuruya Nanboku IV) around 1780. He most likely died in 1787.
