Date of birth unknown. Disciple of the Tsuruya clan, he was recorded for the first time in 1736. He first name was Nanboku Magotar˘ III. He was a t˘dori at the Ichimuraza and never performed on stage. He became the son-in-law of Tsuruya Nanboku II and took the name of Tsuruya Nanboku III in 1763. His daughter Okichi became the wife of Sawa Hy˘z˘ (the future Tsuruya Nanboku IV) around 1780. He most likely died in 1787.
