Career:

Before 1699: he made his apprenticeship in tabi shibai or miyaji shibai in Kamigata. His stage name was Toyoda Dan'emon.

1st lunar month of 1699: first stage record in ôshibai; he performed as a wakashugata in the new year drama "Taema Chûjôhime Nidaiki", which was produced by Kataoka Nizaemon I and Araki Yojibê I.

1st lunar month of 1700: Dan'emon became katakiyaku in Ôsaka and performed in the new year drama "Rishô Monogatari", which was produced by Takeshima Kôjûrô.

Fall 1703: Dan'emon went to Kyôto.

11th lunar month of 1703: Dan'emon played in Kyôto at Hayagumo Chôdayû's theater the role of Kanadome Wakinoshin in the kaomise drama "Kyôzaiku Wagô Jishi".

1st lunar month of 1706: he took the name of Fukuda Dan'emon.

11th lunar month of 1706: Dan'emon performed at Hayagumo Chôdayû's theater in the kaomise drama "Sukeroku Shinjû Kamiko Sugata"; his stage partners were Nakamura Sen'ya I and Yamatoyama Jinzaemon I.

11th lunar month of 1711: Dan'emon became tachiyaku and played in Kyôto at Hayagumo Chôdayû's theater the role of Susakishima Saemon in the kaomise drama "Tsurukame no Aimuko".

3rd lunar month of 1712: Dan'emon's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was naka-no-jô-jô (superior - superior in the middle class).

1st lunar month of 1713: Dan'emon switched back to katakiyaku and played at Kameya Kumenojô's theater the role of Ôshima Danzô in the kaomise drama "Fukubiki Miuma no Ôkamado".

4th lunar month of 1713: Dan'emon's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, katakiyaku section, was jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent) [visual].

Fall 1713: Dan'emon went back to Ôsaka.

11th lunar month of 1713: Dan'emon performed in Ôsaka in Azuma Sanpachi's kaomise drama "Onna Fude Yôbunshô", which was produced by Arashi San'emon III and Ogino Yaegiri I.

1st lunar month of 1714: Dan'emon's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, katakiyaku section, was jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent) [visual].

1st lunar month of 1715: Dan'emon played in Ôsaka the role of the tôfu maker Tokuemon in the kaomise drama "(Jingô Kôgô Sankan Taiji) Ashiwakebune" which was produced by Ogino Yaegiri I.

2nd lunar month of 1716: he took back the name of Toyoda Dan'emon, became jitsuaku and performed in Ôsaka in the kaomise drama "Chôja Mannengura", which was produced by Nakamura Gentarô and Sugiyama Heihachi.

4th lunar month of 1716: Dan'emon's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, jitsuaku section, was jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent) [visual].

11th lunar month of 1716: Dan'emon performed in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai in the kaomise drama "Maizuru Asahi no Ôdaidokoro", which was produced by Iwai Hanshirô III.

11th lunar month of 1717: Dan'emon switched back to katakiyaku and played in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai the role of karô Taema Daigaku in the kaomise drama "Benten Chôja Uga no Tama", which was produced by Ogino Kinnojô.

1st lunar month of 1718: Dan'emon's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, katakiyaku section, fell to jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) [visual].

11th lunar month of 1718: Dan'emon switched to jitsuaku and performed at the Ônishi no Shibai in the kaomise drama "Suehiro Chôja Bandaigura", which was produced by Sawamura Chôjûrô I and celebrated the shûmei of Sugiyama Kanzaemon III.

1st lunar month of 1719: Dan'emon's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, jitsuaku section, fell to jô-jô-(shiro)hankichi (superior - superior - (white) half excellent) [visual]. Dan'emon played in the same theater the role of Harada no Gunji in the new year drama "Genji Shusse no Kadode".

3rd lunar month of 1719: Dan'emon's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, jitsuaku section, was back to jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) [visual].

1st lunar month of 1721: Dan'emon went to Kyôto, took back the name of Fukuda Dan'emon and performed in the new year drama "Bankoku Kin no Fukujusô", which was produced by Ogino Yaegiri I.

3rd lunar month of 1721: Dan'emon's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, jitsuaku section, was jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent) [visual].

11th lunar month of 1721: Dan'emon played in Kyôto at Miyako Mandayû's theater the role of Inamatsu Takiemon in the kaomise drama "Inari Fuku In'yô no Kanegura", which was produced by Sawamura Chôjûrô I.

11th lunar month of 1722: Dan'emon played at Miyako Mandayû's theater the role of the umakata Rokuzô in the kaomise drama "Ôbashira Kogane no Sazare Ishi", which was produced by Segawa Kikunojô I.

2nd lunar month of 1723: Dan'emon played in the same theater the roles of Kanbê and the yamabushi Muzenbô in the new year ni-no-kawari drama "Keisei Oshioyama".

Fall 1723 ~ Fall 1727: Dan'emon was in Kyôto in the troupe led by the zamoto Segawa Kikujirô I but there was no kaomise program.

Fall 1727: Dan'emon went to Edo with Katayama Kozaemon.

11th lunar month of 1727: Dan'emon performed at the Ichimuraza in the kaomise drama "Goshozome Kôyô Gunki", which celebrated the return in Edo of the actor Bandô Hikosaburô I.

1st lunar month of 1728: Dan'emon's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, jitsuaku section, was jô-jô-(hanshiro)kichi (superior - superior - (half-white) excellent) [visual].

Fall 1728: Dan'emon went back to Kyôto.

11th lunar month of 1728: Dan'emon switched to katakiyaku and played at Kameya Kumenojô's theater (Kyôto) the role of Takiguchi Heima in the kaomise drama "Tokiwagura Kogane no Ishizue", which was produced by Tamiya Hannosuke.

1st lunar month of 1729: Dan'emon's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, katakiyaku section, was jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent) [visual].

Fall 1729 ~ Spring 1732: no record in any Kamigata hyôbanki. Was he on tour in tabi shibai or miyaji shibai? Was he sick? Was he retired?

6th lunar month of 1732 ~ 1733: tour in Ise and long stay in Nagoya; Dan'emon's travelling and stage partners were Fujioka Daikichi, Ogino Yaegiri I, Arashi Sanjûrô I, Sakakiyama Fujisaburô, Tatsuoka Someemon, Sawamura Sôgorô I, Sagawa Bunzô II, Tamiya Shirogorô, Ôtori Michiemon and Matsushima Hyôtarô. He performed under the name of Toyoda Dan'emon in 1732 and switched back to Fukuda Dan'emon in 1733. No record afterwards.

Comments:

Fukuda Dan'emon was a popular and talented Kamigata actor, trained in tabi shibai and miyaji shibai, specialized in katakiyaku or jitsuaku roles. He was active from the end of the 1690s to the first half of the 1730s. He was outstanding in villain roles in sewamono dramas. He was also the only actor in Kabuki history to move from a low rank in a hyôbanki (naka-no-jô-jô) to the prestigious jô-jô-kichi rank in 1 year!
