Son of Tamiya Shirogorô, he received the name of Tamiya Hannosuke and performed in Kyôto as a koyaku. 11th lunar month of 1728: Hannosuke became zamoto and produced at Kameya Kumenojô's theater (Kyôto) the kaomise drama "Tokiwagura Kogane no Ishizue". 1732 ~ 1733: Hannosuke worked as a zamoto in Nagoya. 11th lunar month of 1735: he became wakashugata and took the name of Tamiya Jûzaburô I in Ôsaka, performing at the Kado no Shibai in Sadoshima Saburôzaemon's kaomise drama "Ôyamato Kane no Kinzan", which was produced by Nakayama Shinkurô I. Fall 1738: Jûzaburô went back to Kyôto with his father. 11th lunar month of 1738: Jûzaburô became tachiyaku and played the role of the rônin Ikuta Jûzô in the kaomise drama "Neko no Koneko", which was produced at Hoteiya Umenojô's theater (Minamigawa no Shibai) by Mizuki Tatsunosuke II. 1st lunar month of 1739: Jûzaburô's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was jô-jô-(shiro)hankichi (superior - superior - (white) half excellent) [visual]. He shared the same rank as Bandô Sukesaburô I. 11th lunar month of 1739: Jûzaburô played at Ebisuya Kichirôbê's theater the role of Toneyama Jônosuke in the kaomise drama "Senzai Yakata Kogane no Shikigawara", which was produced by Arashi Koroku I. 1st lunar month of 1740: Jûzaburô's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was between jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) and jô-jô-(hanshiro)kichi [visual]. He shared the same rank as Haruyama Genshichi II. 5th lunar month of 1742: Chikamatsu Monzaemon's play "Shinshû Kawanakajima Kassen" was adapted for Kabuki for the first time, in Kyôto at the Kitagawa no Shibai; Jûzaburô played the role of Kôsaka Danjô Masanobu [more details]. 11th lunar month of 1742: Jûzaburô played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the role of Matahei in the kaomise drama "Kaeribana Konrei Nagoya". He also changed the writing of his first name:
Fall 1743: Jûzaburô went to Edo. 11th lunar month of 1743: Jûzaburô played at the Ichimuraza the role of Yoshisada in the kaomise drama "Ishizue Taiheiki", which also celebrated the arrival in Edo of the actors Segawa Kikujirô I and Segawa Somematsu. 1st lunar month of 1744: Jûzaburô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was jô-jô-(hanshiro)kichi (superior - superior - (half-white) excellent) [visual]. He shared the same rank with Ôtani Oniji I, Sakata Tôjûrô III and Tomizawa Tatsujûrô. 2nd lunar month of 1745: Jûzaburô went back to Kyôto to play at Miyako Mandayû's theater the role of Ôuchi Iyonosuke in the new year drama "Keisei Sakura Gassen". This was the last time he shared the same stage with his father Tamiya Shirogorô, who died the same year. 11th lunar month of 1746: Jûzaburô appeared on stage for the last time, in Kyôto at Hoteiya Umenojô's theater, where he performed in the kaomise drama "Tomi Yakata Ômu Kotoba", which was produced by Nakamura Kumetarô I; his stage partners were Sawamura Sôjûrô I, Anegawa Shinshirô I, Sanogawa Jûkichi (final performance before his death), Nakamura Utaemon I, Nakamura Tomijûrô I, Nakamura Shingorô I (final performance before his death), Yamatoyama Rinzaemon I (who celebrated his shûmei) and Nakamura Kiyosaburô I. Spring 1747: Jûzaburô died in Kyôto. Comments: Tamiya Jûzaburô I was a Kamigata tachiyaku actor, who made most of his career in Kyôto and Ôsaka during the first half of the 18th century. His three fields of excellence were budôgoto, yatsushigoto and jitsugoto. |
