Comments:

Ikushima Jûshirô was a tachiyaku actor, who was born in Kyôto but started his career in Edo, where he was active between 1698 and 1709. He went back to Kamigata after 11 seasons in Edo. He was good in aragoto or jitsugoto but his forte was budôgoto.

[1] Was Ikushima Jûshirô the master of Ikushima Kinzô? Ikushima Kinzô was born in 1759. If we assume that Ikushima Jûshirô was 10 years old when he went to Edo in 1698 and that Ikushima Kinzô was 10 years old when he started to be the disciple of Ikushima Jûshirô, it would mean that the master was more than 80 years old at the start of the apprenticeship. Not impossible indeed but we do not exclude the hypothesis that there was another actor who held the name of Ikushima Jûshirô and was the master of Ikushima Kinzô.

[2] Hashimoto Denzô II was recorded as performing at the Nakamuraza in the 11th lunar month of 1702. His rank in the 1703 Edo hyôbanki, wakashugata section, was naka (middle class). No record afterwards.

[3] Was he sick ? Was he in tabi shibai? Was he in miyaji shibai? We don't know.

[4] Also called Sakurabashi Ôshibai (literally 'Grand Kabuki at the Cherry Tree Bridge').
