Iwai Kiyotarô I

Dates of birth and death unknown. Disciple of Iwai Hanshirô III, his first stage name was Iwai Jinnosuke. He became wakaonnagata in Kyôto around 1737. He took the name of Kikukawa Kiyotarô II in 1740. He quarreled with the Kikukawa clan and left it in 1743 to go back to the Iwai clan. He took the name of Iwai Kiyotarô I around that time and went to Edo in Fall 1743. He played in the 11th lunar month of 1743 at the Ichimuraza in the kaomise drama "Ishizue Taiheiki". He was active in Edo up to 1751. He played in the 11th lunar month of 1751 at the Moritaza the role of Makomo-no-Mae in Tsuuchi Jihê II's kaomise drama "Aizuchi Jûnidan", which celebrated the shûmei of Morita Kan'ya VI. This was his last-recorded stage performance. We don't know what happened to him afterwards. He was ranked jô-jô in the 1st lunar month of 1752 Edo hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section.

The actor Ichikawa Yaozô IV held the name of Iwai Kiyotarô II from the 11th lunar month of 1787 to the 10th lunar month of 1804.

Iwai Kiyotarô III
 

The actor Nakamura Shibajûrô held the name of Iwai Kiyotarô III from the 11th lunar month of 1804 to the 10th lunar month of 1819.

Iwai Kiyotarô IV

Dates of birth and death unknown. He started his career in Edo at the beginning of the 1800s, performing under the stage name of Ichikawa Wanizô. He took the name of Ichikawa Tsunejûrô in the 11th lunar month of 1811 at the Ichimuraza, where he performed in the kaomise drama "Itsukushima Yuki no Mitegura" which celebrated the shûmei of Sawamura Sôjûrô IV [1]. He became a disciple of Iwai Hanshirô V in 1820 and took the name of Iwai Kiyotarô IV in the 11th lunar month of 1820 at the Kawarasakiza. This katakiyaku actor was active in Edo up to 1828. Nothing else was recorded about him afterwards.

Dates of birth and death unknown. Unknown relationship to the Iwai clan. Unknown previous stage name. Was he a disciple of Iwai Hanshirô VIII? His name was recorded in a list of dead actors in 1878.

[1] It was also the shûmei of the tatesakusha Tsuruya Nanboku IV and the minor actors Sawamura Kinpei II and Bandô Denzaburô.
