Matsumoto Komagorô I
 

The actor Ichikawa Yaozô IX held the name of Matsumoto Komagorô I from April 1929 to May 1953.

Born in Tôkyô the 3rd of July 1919. He started his career as a disciple of Ichimura Uzaemon XV, who gave him the name of Bandô Rokumaru. He made his debut on stage in 1925 at the Hôrakuza. He also held the name of Bandô Kitsuji for a while. He became a disciple of Matsumoto Kôshirô VII in 1928 and received the name of Matsumoto Somenosuke. He became nadai and celebrated the event in June 1948 at the Tôkyô Gekijô, where he performed in the drama "Manaita no Chôbê". He took the name of Matsumoto Komagorô II in September 1957 at the Kabukiza [1], performing in "Onna Shijin" and "Môja Zuma". Following his masters of the Kôraiya guild, he left the Shôchiku Company for the Tôhô Company to perform in Tôhô Kabuki. He went back to the Shôchiku Company and appeared on stage for the last time in October 1976, in Nagoya at the Misonoza, where he played the role of a taiko mochi in "Gion Ichiriki Jaya". Then, he retired from the Kabuki world. Date of death unknown.

Born in Tôkyô Akasaka the 24th of November 1939. He started his career as a disciple of Matsumoto Kôshirô VIII, who gave him the name of Matsumoto Kin'ichi II. He made his debut on stage in April 1960, in Tôkyô at the Kabukiza, where he played a soldier role in the drama "Moritsuna Jin'ya". He became nadai and celebrated the event by taking the name of Matsumoto Kôtarô II in December 1971 at the Imperial Theater, where he played the role of Takata Unpachi, Yazama Jûtarô, a kôken and Hayase Kingo in "Shibaraku", "Gion Ichiriki Jaya", "Kanjinchô" and "Matsuura no Taiko". He took the name of Matsumoto Komagorô III in November 2014 at the Kabukiza, playing the roles of Kajiwara Heiji Kagetaka and the bansotsu Gunnai in "Kumagai Jin'ya" and "Kanjinchô" [2]. This supporting tachiyaku actor is still active on Kabuki stages.

[1] This program celebrated also the shûmei of 3 others nadai actors: Matsumoto Kôjaku I, Nakamura Kichigorô I and Matsumoto Kônosuke. It was also the hatsubutai of Ichikawa Arajirô III and Matsumoto Matsunosuke.

[2] These dramas were staged within a program commemorating the 32nd anniversary (33rd memorial service) of the passing away of Matsumoto Hakuô I.
