He took the name of Fujimura Uzaemon at an unknown date. 7th lunar month of 1692: Uzaemon played in Kyôto the role of the servant Hachisuke in the drama "Kashima no Kanameishi", which was produced by Yamashita Hanzaemon I. 7th lunar month of 1695: Uzaemon played in Kyôto at Miyako Mandayû's theater the role of a servant in the drama "Shitennô Masu Kagami". 11th lunar month of 1699: Uzaemon played in Kyôto at Kameya Kumenojô's theater the role of Oni no Kinjûrô in the drama "Kyô Hinagata", which was produced by Yamashita Hanzaemon I. 1st lunar month of 1700: Uzaemon in the same theater the role of Kônoike Kyûzaemon in the new year drama "Keisei Okusama Sugata Meshitaki Sugata". 11th lunar month of 1700: he took the name of Fukuoka Yagoshirô in Kyôto at Kameya Kumenojô's theater. 1st lunar month of 1701: Yagoshirô's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, oyajigata section, was naka-no-jô (superior in the middle class). 11th lunar month of 1702: Yagoshirô became sakusha and worked at Miyako Mandayû's theater on the drama "Yomeiri Kosode". 3rd lunar month of 1703: Yagoshirô's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, oyajigata section, was jô (superior) [visual]. 11th lunar month of 1704: Yagoshirô worked as a sakusha in Kyôto at Miyako Mandayû's theater on Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Kisshô Tennyo Anzan no Tama". 7th lunar month of 1707: Yagoshirô worked in Kyôto at Miyako Mandayû's theater on the bon kyôgen "Nyonin Ketsuen no Kanchô". Fall 1707: Yagoshirô went to Ôsaka. 11th lunar month of 1707: Yagoshirô worked as a sakusha and performed as a dôkegata on/in the untitled kaomise which was produced by Iwai Hanshirô II in Ôsaka. He also worked on the kiri kyôgen "Futami no Ura Shûtome Goroshi". 1st lunar month of 1708: Yagoshirô's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, dôkegata section, was jô (superior) [visual]. 11th lunar month of 1708: Yagoshirô played the role of Kinzô in the kaomise drama "Ôkamado Uke Matsuri", which was produced in Ôsaka by Iwai Hanshirô II. 3rd lunar month of 1709: Yagoshirô's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, dôkegata section, was jô-jô (superior - superior) [visual]. 11th lunar month of 1710: Yagoshirô performed in Ôsaka as a dôkegata in the kaomise drama "Shusse Yakushi Jûnishin", which was produced by Arashi Sanjûrô I. 12th lunar month of 1716: he took the name of Kyôya Yagoshirô and played at the Naka no Shibai the role of the ahô Goroshichi in the kaomise drama "Chô Hanagata Sangoku no Mukoiri", which was produced by Ogino Yaegiri I and Arashi Daizaburô I. 3rd lunar month of 1717: Yagoshirô revised Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Kokusen'ya Gassen" in which he played the role of Hirado Yoshirô; his stage partners were Takeshima Kôzaemon II (Watônai), Arashi Sanjûrô I (Rôikkan), Ogino Yaegiri I (Watônai's mother), Sanogawa Hanazuma I (Komutsu, Kinshôjo), Ôtori Michiemon (Gosankei), Yamanaka Naoemon (Ritôten) and Ichikawa Sajûrô (Kanki). 11th lunar month of 1717: Yagoshirô worked as a sakusha in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai on the kaomise drama "Benten Chôja Uga no Tama", which was produced by Ogino Kinnojô. 11th lunar month of 1718: Yagoshirô played in Ôsaka at the Higashi no Shibai the role of Jibudayû in the kaomise drama "Kogane no Seigaiha", which was produced by Arashi San'emon III. 3rd lunar month of 1719: Yagoshirô adapted to Kabuki Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Keisei Hangonkô", in which he played the role of Sakyônodayû [casting]. 11th lunar month of 1719: Yagoshirô played the role of the yanushi Suya Sankurô in the kaomise drama "Kogane no Mitsu Gashiwa", which was produced by Kaneko Kichizaemon at the Ônishi no Shibai. 11th lunar month of 1720: Yagoshirô worked at the Higashi no Shibai (Ôsaka) on the kaomise drama "Kogane no Ikioi" and the kiri kyôgen "Nanshoku Kamo Samurai Jûshichikinenki". 11th lunar month of 1721: Yagoshirô performed in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai in the kaomise drama "Kogane no Shachihoko". 11th lunar month of 1722: Yagoshirô played in Ôsaka at the Higashi no Shibai the role of the painter Kanaoka Ujihisa in the kaomise drama "Tenchi Tennô Sokutai Guruma", which was produced by Arashi Kanshirô I.
Fall 1723: Yagoshirô went back to Kyôto after 16 seasons spent in Ôsaka. 11th lunar month of 1723: he took back the name of Fukuoka Yagoshirô, worked as a sakusha and performed as a oyajigata on/in the kaomise drama "Teono Hajime Kogane no Ishizue", which was produced by Segawa Kikunojô I. 1st lunar month of 1724: Yagoshirô's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, oyajigata section, was jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) [visual]. He worked in the same theater as a sakusha on the new year ni-no-kawari drama "Keisei Futakamiyama" in which he played the role of Taema Senzaemon. 11th lunar month of 1725: Yagoshirô performed as a dôkegata in the kaomise drama "Sanpukutsui Eiga no Shikishi". 1st lunar month of 1726: Yagoshirô's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, dôkegata section, was jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) [visual]. 11th lunar month of 1728: Yagoshirô played in Kyôto at Hayagumo Chôdayû's theater the role of the master Ibukiyama Naizen in the kaomise drama "Daimyô Kogane no Uroko", which was produced by Sanogawa Mangiku. 7th lunar month of 1729: Yagoshirô worked as a sakusha, along with Azuma Sanpachi, in the same theater on the drama "Keisei Issôshu". 11th lunar month of 1729: Yagoshirô worked as a sakusha, along with Azuma Sanpachi, and played the role of the master Miwa Kurando in the kaomise drama "Yomeiri Shichigosan", which was produced by Arashi Koroku I for the nadai Daikokuya Takenojô and welcomed in Kyôto the actor Sawamura Otoemon I. 2nd lunar month of 1730: Yagoshirô worked as a sakusha in the same theater on the drama "Daidairi Ôtomo no Matori". No record afterwards. Comments: Fukuoka Yagoshirô was active in Kamigata from the beginning of the 1690s to 1730. He was not only a famous and popular oyajigata/dôkegata actor, but also a sakusha who worked on at least 20 original dramas or adaptation to Kabuki of Chikamatsu Monzaemon's dramas. He was said to be 90 years old in 1730. He compiled famous quotes or ideas from the onnagata star Yoshizawa Ayame I in a book, which was entitled "Ayame Gusa" (literally "Sayings of Ayame") and which became the bible for onnagata actors. |
