Arashi Hirosaburô

Born in October 1878 in Ôsaka in the district of Kuzaemon-chô. He was the son of Arashi Dannosuke and the brother of Jitsukawa Yaozô II. He made his debut on stage in March 1883 at the Nakaza, where he received the name of Arashi Hirosaburô. He became nadai and celebrated in January 1901 in Kyôto at the Kyôto Kabukiza, where he played the roles of Kinokuniya Koharu and Miuraya Agemaki in "Kawashô" and "Kurotegumi Sukeroku". He was active in Kamigata up to his death in 1937. He was talented and popular onnagata actor in Kamigata koshibai. His best roles were Osono in "Sakaya", Princess Yaegaki in "Jusshukô", Omitsu in "Nozaki-mura" and Kajiwara Genta Kagesue in "Genta Kandô". He died in 1937.

Dates of birth and death unknown. Master unknown. First performance recorded in the 1st lunar month of 1715, in Ôsaka, where he played the role of Akoya in the kaomise drama "(Jingô Kôgô Sankan Taiji) Ashiwakebune" which was produced by Ogino Yaegiri I. He appeared on stage for the last time in Ôsaka in the 2nd lunar month of 1726, where he performed in the new year drama "Butsumo Mayasan Kaichô". His ranking in the 1726 Ôsaka hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was jô-(shiro)jô (superior - (white) superior) [visual]. No record afterwards.

Arashi Shinobu

Dates of birth and death unknown. His first stage name was Arashi Shinobu and his first performances were recorded in the Kabuki chronicles in 1732 in Nagoya. He went to Ôsaka in Fall 1735 and took the name of Arashi Kiyosaburô III in the 11th lunar month of 1735 at the Naka no Shibai, playing the role of the nyôbô Komaki the kaomise drama "Toyo no Asahi Eitaigura", which was produced by Iwai Hanshirô III and celebrated the arrival in Ôsaka of the Edo actor Bandô Hikosaburô I. He went to Kyôto in Fall 1736 and took back the name of Arashi Shinobu in the 11th lunar month of 1736, playing the role of Tsunaemon's wife Okatsu in the kaomise drama "Shin-yakata Imosegura", which was produced at Hayagumo Chôdayû's theater by Mizuki Takenosuke. He appeared on ôshibai stage for the last time in the 1st lunar month of 1738, playing in Kyôto in the new year drama "Keisei Daihi no Taki", which was produced by Yoshizawa Tamazuma at Ebisuya Kichirôbê's theater. We don't know what happened to him afterwards.

Date of birth unknown. Disciple of Arashi Sanjûrô I, he received the name of Arashi Otonosuke. He stopped acting as a wakashugata for a while and became a shamisen-player named Tsurusawa Bunjirô. He took the name of Arashi Tôjûrô around 1744, when he performed with his master in tabi shibai. He became tachiyaku in the 11th lunar month of 1748, when he performed in Kyôto at Miyako Handayû's theater in the kaomise drama "Mitsu Uroko Asahi no Ume", which was produced by the zamoto Somematsu Shichisaburô I. He settled in Ôsaka in Fall 1750. He went on tour in Nagoya in 1757. He went back to Kyôto in Fall 1759. He performed in 1766 at the Shukuin no Shibai in Sakai. He appeared on stage for the last time in the 11th lunar month of 1779, in Kyôto at Hoteiya Umenojô and Miyako Mandayû theater, where he played the role of Hôjô Ujitoki in the kaomise drama "Kaikei Kikkegawara", which was produced by Somematsu Shichisaburô II. His rank in the 1780 Kyôto hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was jô-jô-hankichi (superior - superior - half excellent) [visual]. He died the 4th day of the 4th lunar month of 1780 [1]. A minor Kamigata actor held the name of Arashi Tôjûrô during the first half of the 1800s.
