Career:

1769 ~ 1785: born in Ôsaka. He started his career as a disciple of the hama shibai actor Tanimura Junpachi, who gave him the name of Tanimura Torazô.

Spring 1785: Torazô made his first stage appearance, in Ôsaka at the Kadomaruza, where he played the role of Ômi no Kotôta in the drama "Soga Monogatari".

11th lunar month of 1823: Tomoemon took part in the kaomise program produced by Nakamura Kazuma in Ôsaka at the Naka no Shibai; he played the roles of Maboroshi Takeemon and Osada Tarô in the dramas "Futatsu Chôchô Kuruwa Nikki" and "Naka ni Atatte Kogane no Kurairi".

4th lunar month of 1824: Tomoemon played at the Kitagawa no Shibai the role of Adachi Tomokurô in the drama "Katakiuchi An'eiroku". He also played the role of Tanba Mosaku in Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Daikyôji Mukashi Goyomi". The roles of Mohei and Osan were played by Arashi Kitsusaburô II and Arashi Tomisaburô II.

6th lunar month of 1824: tour in Nara with Arashi Tomisaburô II and Nakayama Bunshichi III.

9th lunar month of 1824: Tomoemon played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Watônai's father Rôikkan in Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Kokusen'ya Gassen", which was produced by Nakamura Kazuma; the role of Watônai was played by Arashi Kitsusaburô II. 11th lunar month of 1824: Tomoemon played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the role of Watônai's father Rôikkan in Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Kokusen'ya Gassen"; the role of Watônai was played by Arashi Kitsusaburô II. Tomoemon also played the role of the yakko Edohei in "Koi Nyôbô Somewake Tazuna".

9th lunar month of 1828: Tomoemon played in the same theater the roles of Ishizuka Genba and Sasaki Sadayori in the drama "Monogusa Tarô". He also played the role of Honjô Sukeemon in the drama "Hiyokumon Kuruwa no Nishikie".

11th lunar month of 1828: Tomoemon played in the same theater the role of Ikkaku in the drama "Kagamiyama Kuruwa no Kikigaki", which was produced by Kataoka Shimamaru.

This performance celebrated the arrival in Ôsaka of the Edo star Ichikawa Danjûrô VII, who decided to perform here under the name of Ichikawa Hakuen II.

3rd lunar month of 1830: Tomoemon played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Manno and Tsurugisawa Danjô in the dramas "Ise Ondo Koi no Netaba" and "Kagamiyama Gonichi no Omokage", which were produced by Nakamura Tomisuke; his stage partners in the roles of Fukuoka Mitsugi and Okon ("Ise Ondo Koi no Netaba") were Onoe Kikugorô III and Nakamura Tomijûrô II. Then, he played 4 roles in the drama "Taikô Ensho Awase" but collapsed and died suddenly the 24th day of the 3rd lunar month of 1830 [3] in Ôsaka [5].

Comments:

Ôtani Tomoemon II was a talented tachiyaku, katakiyaku and jitsuaku, who received his name in Edo but spent most of his career in the Kamigata theaters. It was said that he excelled in the tachimawari scenes.

Ôtani Tomoemon II's best roles: Gonshirô ("Hirakana Seisuiki") and Satô Gôsuke ("Hakone Reigen Izari no Adauchi").
