Line number: SHODAI (I) Existence: ??? ~ 1749 [1] Connection: Master: Yamanaka Heikurô I Brother: Namie Karumo Disciple: Yamanaka Heijûrô II Career: Before 1709: younger brother of Namie Karumo and son-in-law of Yamanaka Heikurô I's aunt, his first stage name was Nakamura Kuheiji but his relationship to the Nakamura clan could not be clarified. 11th lunar month of 1709: thanks to his family relationship, he became a disciple of Yamanaka Heikurô I and received the name of Yamanaka Heijûrô I in the at the Ichimuraza, where he performed as a tachiyaku in the kaomise drama "Genpuku Nue Yorimasa". 1st lunar month of 1713: he became katakiyaku, performing at the Ichimuraza in the new year drama "Taihei Onna Imagawa". Fall 1713: Heijûrô went to Kamigata. 11th lunar month of 1713: Heijûrô performed in Ôsaka in the kaomise drama "Yoyo Meoto Tsuru no Mago", which was produced by Arashi Sanjûrô I. 11th lunar month of 1723: Heijûrô performed at the Ichimuraza in the kaomise drama "Hinagata Shuten Dôji", which celebrated the arrival in Edo of the Kamigata actor Ogino Izaburô I. 15th day of the 5th lunar month of 1724 [2]: his master Yamanaka Heikurô I died in Edo. 11th lunar month of 1735: Heijûrô became jitsuaku in Kyôto at Kameya Kumenojô's theater, where he performed in the kaomise drama "Ôkamado Miyako no Ichigura" which was produced by Yamamoto Kyôzô. 1st lunar month of 1723: Heijûrô's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, jitsuaku section, was jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) [visual]. 2nd lunar month of 1738: premiere in Kyôto of Matsuda Bunkôdô's drama "Yukihira Isonare Matsu"; Heijûrô played the roles of Hagun Tarô and Agata no Hangan [more details]. 11th lunar month of 1739: Heijûrô played the role of Nikki Danjô in the kaomise drama "Muromachi-dono Chôhô Denki", which is produced by Sanogawa Ichimatsu I for the nadai Miyako Mandayû; his stage partners are Sawamura Otoemon I (Ôuchi Kamon), Ôtani Hiroji I (Ise no Saburô) and Onoe Kikugorô I (Enju). 11th lunar month of 1743: Heijûrô played at the Naka no Shibai in the kaomise drama "Shiki Samba Ôgi Ikusa", which is produced by Anegawa Shinshirô I and celebrates the shûmei of Shinozuka Jirozaemon II. 7th lunar month of 1744: Heijûrô played in the same theater in the drama "Otoko Date Gojitsu Kagami". 12th lunar month of 1745: the drama "Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami" is performed for the first time in Ôsaka, simultaneously in the three major theaters of the city, which starts a competition for the best performance; Heijûrô played the role of Mikawaya Giheiji at the Kado no Shibai [casting].
11th lunar month of 1748: Heijûrô appeared on stage for the last time, in Kyôto Miyako Handayû's theater, where he played the role of Ômori Hikoshichi in the kaomise drama "Mitsu Uroko Asahi no Ume", which was produced by the zamoto Somematsu Shichisaburô I. 1st lunar month of 1749: Heijûrô's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, jitsuaku section, was jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) [visual]. Beginning of 1749: Heijûrô died [1]. Comments: Yamanaka Heijûrô I was active from the second half of the 1700s to the end of the 1740s. He was a katakiyaku/jitsuaku actor, who started his career in Edo and ended it in Kamigata. There are huge differences between the latest edition (2012) of "Kabuki Haiyû Meiseki Benran" and Nojima Jusaburô's book "Kabuki Jinmei Jiten"; in the latter, Yamanaka Heijûrô I was active up to 1715 and never held the name of Nakamura Kuheiji. We've decided to stay in line with the "Kabuki Haiyû Meiseki Benran". [1] He was reported as dead in the Kyôto hyôbanki which was published in the 3rd lunar month of 1749.
