Tamenaga Tarobê I

Dates of birth and death unknown. Disciple of Takeda Izumo, he started his career in 1737 in the puppet theater in Ôsaka at the Takemotoza. He took the name of Tamenaga Tarobê I in 1740. He switched to Kabuki in 1748 and took the name of Tamenaga Senchô. He worked in the 3rd lunar month of 1748 in Ôsaka at the Naka no Shibai, along with Matsuya Raisuke I and Takeda Bunzô, on the drama "Tôkaidô Kosute Ume", which was produced by Ichikawa Ryûzô. He worked in the 7th lunar month of 1751, at the service of the tatesakusha Namiki Shôzô I, in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai on the summer drama "Sannin Gumi Somenuki Moyô", which was produced by Nakamura Utaemon I. He worked in the same theater in the 8th lunar month of 1851 on the kiri kyôgen "Amayadori Kurenai no Hanagoza". No record afterwards. He was the master of Tamenaga Heisaku, Tamenaga Icchô, Takeda Nisôji, Tamekawa Sôsuke and Tamenaga Tarobê II [1].

Dates of birth and death unknown. Reported as a disciple of Tamenaga Senchô [1], he was reported for the first time in Fall 1807, when he worked at the Kawarasakiza in the 11th lunar month of 1807 on the kaomise drama "Bandai Fueki Shibai no Hajimari" [2]. He was recorded for the last time in 1842. No record afterwards for this minor sakusha.

[1] It was reported in Nojima Jusaburô's book "Kabuki Jinmei Jiten" that Tamenaga Tarobê II was a disciple of Tamenaga Senchô. Was he really ? The former sakusha started to work at the end of the 1800s while the latter sakusha disappeared from the theater playbill at the beginning of the 1750s. More than 50 years between the end and the beginning of the two careers.

[2] The tatesakusha was Namiki Gohei I. The others sakusha were Shinoda Kinji I, Tagawa Shôsaku, Sone Shôkichi I and Matsukawa Tanji.
