12th lunar month of 1722: first Kabuki adaptation of Chikamatsu Monzaemon's puppet theater drama "Nebiki no Kadomatsu", which was written in the 1st lunar month of 1718. The play was staged in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai, under the title "Yamazaki Yojibê Hanchû Bushi" with the following casting:
1st lunar month of 1724: premiere at the Kado no Shibai of "Edoe Ukiyo Soga", an Edo-flavored new year drama welcoming in Ôsaka the Edo actor Ôtani Hiroji I. This sogamono mixed the Soga world with "Sonezaki Shinjû" (entitled "Sonezaki Shinjû Soga"), "Kokusen'ya Gassen" (entitled "Kokusen'ya Soga") and a kurofune-chûemonmono (entitled "Kurofune Soga"). They were staged with the following casting:
9th lunar month of 1729: Yoshizawa Sakinosuke I took the name of Yoshizawa Ayame II at the Kado no Shibai. 8th lunar month of 1730: first Kabuki adaptation of Hasegawa Senshi and Matsuda Bunkôdô puppet theater drama "Miura no Ôsuke Kôbai Tazuna", which was written in the 2nd lunar month of 1730. The play was produced by Arashi Sanjûrô II in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai. 3rd ~ 4th lunar months of 1732: the play "Kiichi Hôgen Sanryaku no Maki" was produced by Arashi Kokuseki at the Kado no Shibai with the following casting:
3rd lunar month of 1733: the drama "Dan no Ura Kabuto Gunki" was performed for the first time in Ôsaka, at the Kado no Shibai. It was staged with the following casting:
1st lunar month of 1736: the play "Karukaya Dôshin Tsukushi no Iezuto", which was originally written for the puppet theater and staged for the first time in the 8th lunar month of 1735 in Ôsaka at the Toyotakeza, was adapted for Kabuki for the first time, in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai (unknown casting). 9th lunar month of 1740: the play "Hirakana Seisuiki" was performed for the first time in Ôsaka, at the Kado no Shibai. It was produced by Nakamura Jûzô I and Nakamura Tomijûrô I played the role of Chidori. 12th lunar month of 1745: the drama "Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami" was staged at the Kado no Shibai for the first time, produced by Arashi Sanjûrô II with the following casting:
The same play was simultaneously produced at the Naka no Shibai [casting], Ônishi no Shibai [casting] and Kado no Shibai. 12th lunar month of 1748: the play "Kanadehon Chûshingura", which was originally written for the puppet theater and staged for the first time in the 8th lunar month of 1748 in Ôsaka at the Takemotoza, was adapted for Kabuki for the first time, in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai. It was produced by the zamoto Arashi Sangorô II with the following casting:
11th lunar month of 1752: Arashi Iwajirô I took the name of Arashi Hinasuke I at the Kado no Shibai. 9th lunar month of 1757: first Kabuki adaptation of Namiki Senryû I and Miyoshi Shôraku puppet theater drama "Genpei Nunobiki no Taki", which was written in 1749. The play was produced by Anegawa Daikichi I in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai (casting unknown). 12th lunar month of 1758: premiere at the Kado no Shibai of Namiki Shôzô I's drama "Sanjikkoku Yofune no Hajimari"; for the very first time in Kabuki history, a mawari-butai, invented by Namiki Shôzô I, was built and used on the stage of a theater. It was staged with the following casting:
1st lunar month of 1761: premiere in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai of Namiki Shôzô I's ni-no-kawari drama "Kiritarô Tengu no Sakamori", which was staged with the following casting:
5th lunar month of 1762: premiere in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai of Namiki Shôzô I's drama "Koi Hakke Hashira Goyomi", which was a revision of Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Daikyôji Mukashi Goyomi"; it was staged with the following casting:
9th lunar month of 1764: première in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai of "Oriawase Tsuzure no Nishiki", based on the puppet drama "Katakiuchi Tsuzure no Nishiki", which was revised by Namiki Jûsuke, Ichiyama Bokuhei and Namiki Ôsuke. It celebrated the 16th anniversary (17th memorial service) of the passing away of the star Anegawa Shinshirô I. A similar play was staged one day later under a different title, "Hare Kosode Tsuzure no Nishiki", at the Naka no Shibai [casting]. The competition for the best performance and the best line-up was open between the 2 theaters. The performance at the Kado no Shibai was more successful than the one at the Naka no Shibai. "Tsuzure no Nishiki" was produced at the Kado no Shibai by Nakayama Bunshichi I with the following casting:

6th lunar month of 1770: Namiki Shôzô I's drama "Yadonashi Danshichi Shigure no Karakasa" was staged for the first time in Ôsaka ôshibai, at the Kado no Shibai with the following casting:
9th lunar month of 1774: Yoshizawa Ayame III appeared on stage for the last time, in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai. 8th lunar month of 1775: the play "Sekitori Senryô Nobori" was staged for the first time in Ôsaka, produced by Ogawa Kichitarô I at the Kado no Shibai with the following casting:
7th lunar month of 1776: premiere of Iso Isosuke's drama "Yamato Kotoba Suikoden" at the Kado no Shibai; it was produced by Ogawa Kichitarô I and staged with the following casting:
4th lunar month of 1777: premiere of Namiki Gohachi's drama "Tenmangû Natane no Gokû", co-written with Nakamura Akei and Tatsuoka Mansaku, which was staged at the Kado no Shibai with the following casting:

A similar play was staged a few days later under a different title, "Renga Chaya Homare no Bundai", at the Naka no Shibai [casting]. The competition for the best performance and the best line-up was open between the 2 theaters. "Tengajaya-mura" was produced at the Kado no Shibai by Fujikawa Sango with the following casting:

7th lunar month of 1789: premiere in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai of Namiki Gohei I's drama "Kanjin Kanmon Tekuda no Hajimari", which was staged with the following casting:
9th lunar month of 1791: premiere at the Kadoza of Nagawa Shimesuke I's drama "Iroha Gana Shijûshichi Moji", which was produced by Nakayama Ittoku I and was staged with the following casting:
1st ~ 3rd lunar months of 1794: premiere of Tatsuoka Mansaku's drama "Keisei Haru no Tori" (7 acts - 23 scenes), which included the famous "Umagiri" scene, a scene where a horseman was cut down with a single slash by Oda Nobutaka. Tatsuoka Mansaku was assisted by Chikamatsu Tokusô and Nagawa Shimesuke I. This ni-no-kawari drama was produced by the zamoto Asao Okujirô I in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai and was staged with the following casting:
9th lunar month of 1794: first Kabuki adaptation of Chikamatsu Hanji's puppet theater drama "Kamakura Sandaiki", which was written in 1781. The play was produced by the zamoto Asao Okujirô I in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai with the following casting:
3rd lunar month of 1795: Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Komochi Yamanba", which was originally written for the puppet theater, was adapted for Kabuki for the first time, in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai. It was successfully staged from the 11th of March to the 27th of April with the following casting:
2nd lunar month of 1796: Suga Sensuke's puppet theater drama "Keisei Koi no Hikyaku" was adapted to Kabuki for the first time and staged at the Kado no Shibai with the following casting:
4th lunar month of 1796: premiere at the Kado no Shibai of the drama "Hade Kurabe Ishikawa-zome", written by Chikamatsu Tokuzô, Tatsuoka Mansaku and Namiki Shôzô II. Arashi Koroku III was supposed to play the roles of Ishikawa Goemon, Ishida-no-Tsubone and Rikyû but he died the 29th day of the 3rd lunar month of 1796. He was replaced by his son Arashi Hinasuke II. The play was a huge success and was staged in Ôsaka from the 1st day of the 4th lunar month up to the 17th day of the 5th lunar month. Then, the troupe moved to Kyôto to perform it at the Kitagawa no Shibai from the 19th day of the 5th lunar month to the last third of the 7th lunar month! The drama was produced in Ôsaka by Fujikawa Hachizô III with the following casting:
7th lunar month of 1796: premiere of Chikamatsu Tokuzô's play "Ise Ondo Koi no Netaba" in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai. It was produced by Fujikawa Hachizô III and staged with the following casting:
11th lunar month of 1800: first Kabuki adaptation, at the Kado no Shibai, of Chikamatsu Yanagi's puppet theater drama "Ehon Taikôki", which was produced by Nakayama Tokujirô with the following casting:
1st lunar month of 1810: premiere at the Kado no Shibai of Chikamatsu Tokuzô and Namiki Miyosuke ni-no-kawari drama "Keisei Sato no Funauta", which was produced by Mimasu Kumesaburô with the following casting:
1st lunar month of 1814: premiere at the Kado no Shibai of Nagawa Harusuke I's drama "Keisei Tsukushi no Tsumagoto", the first play in Kabuki history based on the "Asagao Nikki" world. The play was produced by Ichikawa Zentarô with the following casting:
4th lunar month of 1819: Ichikawa Shikô I took the name of Ichikawa Danzô V in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai. 3rd lunar month of 1821: premiere at the Kado no Shibai of the drama "Kajiwara Heizô Kôbai Tazuna", a new version of the third act of "Miura no Ôsuke Kôbai Tazuna", revised by Kanazawa Ryûgoku I. It was staged with the following casting:
5th day of the 2nd lunar month of 1827: a fire broke out within the Kado no Shibai, destroying itself, the Naka no Shibai, the Ônishi no Shibai and the Kadomaru no Shibai. 1st lunar month of 1830: premiere at the Kado no Shibai of the new year ni-no-kawari ishikawa-goemonmono drama "Keisei Setsugekka", which was staged with the following casting:
2nd lunar month of 1832: the "Gojôbashi" scene of "Ôgiya Kumagai", which was not in the original puppet drama, was added to this drama for the first time and staged in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai. This new scene was a kind of parody of the famous encounter on the Gojô Bridge in Kyôto between the young boy Ushiwakamaru and the warrior priest Musashibô Benkei. "Ôgiya Kumagai" was staged with the following casting:
1st lunar month of 1833: Nakamura Matsue III took the prestigious name of Nakamura Tomijûrô II, which had not been held since 8th lunar month of 1786, at the Kado no Shibai. Premiere of "Chichi Morai", staged as the second part of the new year drama "Keisei Chigo-ga-Fuchi" with the following casting:
1st lunar month of 1839: premiere at the Kado no Shibai of Nishizawa Ippô's drama "Keisei Hama no Masago", which was staged with the following casting:
3rd lunar month of 1839: the play "Sesshû Gappô-ga-Tsuji" was staged for the first time in Ôsaka, at the Kado no Shibai, with the following casting:
1848: Ichikawa Tatsuzô made his first stage appearance at the Kadoza. 21st day of the 4th lunar month of 1852: a fire broke out within the Kado no Shibai and destroyed three theaters and numerous others buildings. 10th lunar month of 1852: Ichikawa Kuzô II took the name of Ichikawa Danzô VI at the Kadoza. 11th lunar month of 1855: first Kabuki adaptation of Yamada-no-Kakashi's puppet theater drama "Shôutsushi Asagao Nikki", which was staged as kodomo shibai at the Kado no Shibai with the following casting:

January 1909: Ichikawa Udanji I and his son Ichikawa Unosuke I respectively took the names of Ichikawa Sai'nyû and Ichikawa Udanji II at the Kadoza. October 1941: Nakamura Senjaku I took the name of Nakamura Kanjaku IV at the Kadoza; his son Nakamura Senjaku II made his first stage appearance. |
