Career:

1755 ~ 1787: born in Ôsaka. He was recruited and trained by Nakamura Jûzô I, performing under the name of Nakamura Matsusuke in Ôsaka in a troupe of children actors (Kodomo Shibai). The star Asao Tamejûrô I took him as a disciple and gave him in 1777 the name of Asao Kunigorô II. After a few years, he was expelled from the Asao clan because of a quarrel with his master. He took for a while the name of Yamazawa Kunigorô. He quickly received the pardon of Asao Tamejûrô I and could take back the name of Asao Kunigorô II.

11th lunar month of 1784: Kunigorô played in Kyôto at the Nishi no Shibai the role of Miura Danjô in Tatsuoka Mansaku's kaomise drama "Kuni no Hana Ôshimadai", which was produced by Nakayama Ihachi II.

8th lunar month of 1787: Namiki Gohê's drama "Taikô Shinkenki", which was premiered in the 3rd lunar month of 1787 at the Naka no Shibai, was staged for the first time in Kyôto; Kunigorô played the role of Kyôgoku no Takumi [casting].

End of the 1st lunar month of 1788: Asao Kunigorô II was allowed to take the prestigious name of Kataoka Nizaemon, in Kyôto at the Nishi no Shibai. The theater was destroyed by a big fire and the troupe has to move to Ôsaka to perform at the Ônishi no Shibai.

7th lunar month of 1831: Nizaemon played at the Kado no Shibai the role of Hôjô no Tokimasa in the drama "Ômi Genji Senjin Yakata", which was produced by Arashi Tokusaburô III. He also played the roles of Shinjûrô and Hansai in "Meisaku Kiriko no Akebono" and "Katsuragawa Renri no Shigarami" (the latter play replacing in the program the former which was not successful).

9th lunar month of 1831: Nizaemon played in the same theater the roles of Daitôji Nisaku and Tashiro Sagosaemon in the drama "Chûkô Homare no Futamichi".

11th lunar month of 1831: the Kado no Shibai troupe moved to Kyôto; Nizaemon played at the Kitagawa no Shibai the roles of Kakogawa Honzô and Ishidô Umanojô in the classic "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

1st lunar month of 1832: Nizaemon's rank in the Kamigata hyôbanki was murui-rôkô-jô-jô-kichi (unequaled veteran - superior - superior - excellent. He played at the Ônishi no Shibai the roles of Kasahara Shinsaburô, the peasant Shichisuke and Katô Kiyomasa in the drama "Katakiuchi Nitô Eiyûki", which was produced by Arashi Kitsunosuke.

3rd lunar month of 1832: Nizaemon played in the same theater the roles of Otama and Yuminosuke in the drama "Tsukushi no Tsumagoto Asagao Nikki".

5th lunar month of 1832: Nizaemon played in the same theater the role of Tsuribune Sabu in the drama "Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami"; his stage partners were Arashi Rikan II (Danshichi Kurobê) and Iwai Shijaku I (Issun Tokubê). He also performed in "Yoshiwara Saiken no Zu".

6th lunar month of 1832: tour in the province of Hyôgo. Nizaemon played among others the roles of Enju and Gonshirô in the drama "Hirakana Seisuiki".

8th lunar month of 1832: Nizaemon performed at the Naka no Shibai in the drama "Ehon Tengajaya-mura", which was produced by Arashi Takejirô.

5th lunar month of 1834: Nizaemon played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Enju in the drama "Hirakana Seisuiki".

1st lunar month of 1836: premiere at the Naka no Shibai of Nishizawa Ippô's drama "Hana no Ani Tsubomi no Yatsufusa" Nizaemon played the role of Yamanouchi Akisada [casting].

11th lunar month of 1836: Nizaemon appeared on stage for the last time, in Kyôto at the Minamigawa no Shibai, playing the role of Yasojima no Tsubone in the drama "Hachijin Shugo no Honjô".

Spring 1837: Nizaemon went back to Ôsaka, where he was supposed to perform at the Kado no Shibai, but he fell seriously ill.

1st day of the 3rd lunar month of 1837 [1]: Nizaemon died in Ôsaka [2].

Comments:

Kataoka Nizaemon VII was an outstanding tachiyaku actor and a leading star for the Kamigata Kabuki at the end of the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth centuries. He toured a lot in the Nagoya area and spent several long stays in Edo, where his talent was appreciated as much as it was in Ôsaka or Kyôto.

His forte were the katakiyaku, jitsugotoshi and oyajigata roles. He was also a good onnagata, especially in the role of Shigenoi in the drama "Koi Nyôbô Somewake Tazuna".

His best roles: Yokozô ("Honchô Nijûshikô"), Higuchi Jirô Kanemitsu ("Hirakana Seisuiki"), Shigenoi ("Koi Nyôbô Somewake Tazuna"), Gotobê ("Yoshitsune Koshigoejô") and Matsuômaru/Kakuju/Shiratayû ("Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami").

[1] The 1st day of the 3rd lunar month of the 8th year of the Tenpô era was the 5th of April 1837 in the western calendar.

[2] His tombstone was located in the cemetery of the Yakuôji temple (Ôsaka).

[3] Another possible reading of this title could be "Muro no Ume Hangan Biiki". This drama was premiered in the 11th lunar month of 1817 at the Miyakoza.

[4] The 15th day of the 9th lunar month of the 1st year of the Kansei era was the 2nd of November 1789 in the western calendar.
