Career:

1781: Arashi Matsunosuke started his career as a wakashugata.

11th lunar month of 1788: Matsunosuke became tachiyaku and played the role of Sanbas˘ in the dance "Imay˘ Sanbas˘", which was staged in Ky˘to at Kameya Kumenoj˘'s theater.

11th lunar month of 1797: great shűmei for the Ky˘ya guild; Arashi Sangor˘ II and Arashi Matsunosuke respectively took the names of Arashi Raishi I and Arashi Sangor˘ III in Ky˘to at the Minamigawa no Shibai. This was the last stage appearance in ˘shibai of his father (isse ichidai performance) and they performed together in the kaomise drama "Nanboku Yuki no Miyako", which was produced by Arashi Kumanosuke.

1st lunar month of 1798: Sangor˘ moved to ďsaka and plays 2 roles in the new year drama "Keisei Hana no Kitayama", which was produced by Mimasu Daijir˘ at the Wakadayű no Shibai.

9th lunar month of 1801: premiere at the Kitagawa no Shibai of Shiba Shis˘'s drama "Hakone Reigen Izari no Adauchi"; Sangor˘ played the role of Iinuma Katsugor˘ [casting].

Summer 1802: the play "Ehon Taik˘ki" was staged for the first time in Ky˘to, produced by Arashi Sankichi at the Kitagawa no Shibai; Sangor˘ played the role of Oda Harunaga [casting].

2nd day of the 5th lunar month of 1803 [3]: his father Arashi Raishi I died.

1st lunar month of 1804: Sangor˘ played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Nagoya Sanza in the drama "Keisei Hangonk˘".

10th lunar month of 1804: Sangor˘ played at the Naka no Shibai the roles of Tabakoya Genshichi and Sakata Tokiyuki in Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Komochi Yamanba", which was produced by Anegawa Kamesabur˘; the role of the courtesan Oginoya Yaegiri was played by Sawamura Kunitar˘ I.

4th ~ 6th lunar months of 1806: tour in Nagoya with Arashi Kichisabur˘ II, Yoshizawa Iroha I, Sawamura Tanosuke II and Nakayama Bungor˘ I; they performed at the Tachibana no Shibai in dramas like "Keisei Sakura no Shima", "Gion Sairei Shink˘ki", "Hirakana Seisuiki", "Sarumawashi Kadode no Hitofushi" or "Komochi Yamanba".

3rd lunar month of 1807: Sangor˘ played at the Kitagawa no Shibai the role of Yamazakiya Yogor˘ in the drama "Futatsu Ch˘ch˘ Kuruwa Nikki"; the role of the sum˘ wrestler Nuregami Ch˘gor˘ was played by Nakamura Utaemon III.

Spring 1812: Sangor˘ played at the Kita-Horie Ichi-no-Gawa Shibai (ďsaka) the roles of Kameya Chűbŕ and Fukuoka Mitsugi in the dramas "Keisei Koi Bikyaku" and "Ise Ondo Koi no Netaba"; the roles of Chűbŕ's lover Umegawa and Mitsugi's lover Okon were played by Nakayama Yoshio I.

Fall 1812: Sangor˘ played at the Kitano Shita-no-Mori no Shibai the role of Daihanji no Kiyosumi, Tadanobu and Tabakoya Genshichi in the dramas "Imoseyama Onna Teikin", "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura" and "Komochi Yamanba".

11th lunar month of 1813: Sangor˘ played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the role of Ono no Yorikaze in the drama "Ono no T˘fű Aoyagi Suzuri".

1st lunar month of 1814: Sangor˘ played in the same theater the role of Yodoya Tatsugor˘ in the drama "Keisei Yanagi Zakura".

Fall 1814: Sangor˘ went to Edo.

11th lunar month of 1814: Sangor˘ played at the Ichimuraza in the kaomise drama "Sekai no Hana Sugawara Denju"; his stage partners were Ichikawa Danjűr˘ VII, Matsumoto K˘shir˘ V, Iwai Hanshir˘ V and Suketakaya Takasuke II. This kaomise program was a huge success.

1st lunar month of 1815: Sangor˘'s rank in the Edo hy˘banki, tachiyaku section, was j˘-j˘-kichi (superior - superior - excellent).

5th lunar month of 1815: premiere at the Ichimuraza of Sakurada Jisuke II's Kiyomoto-based dance-drama "Imay˘ Suma no Utsushie" (commonly called "Suma no Utsushie"); Sangor˘ played the roles of Ariwara no Yukihira and the ry˘shi Konohŕ [casting].

6th lunar month of 1815: Sangor˘ played in the drama "Ran'yatai Nitta Keizu". This production was a financial disaster for the Ichimuraza. Sangor˘ decided to leave the troubled theater and he went back to Kamigata.

Summer 1815: tour in Nagoya.

1st lunar month of 1816: Sangor˘ played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the roles of Bunji and Kenj˘ in the drama "ďshű Adachi-ga-Hara".

2nd lunar month of 1816: Sangor˘ played at the Naka no Shibai the roles of Dankur˘ and Sonobe Hy˘e in the drama "Sono no Yuki Koi no Kumidai", similar to "Shin Usuyuki Monogatari". He also played the roles of Yasuke, Taira no Koremori, Sat˘ Tadanobu and the fox Genkur˘ in the drama "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura".

4th lunar month of 1816: Sangor˘ played in the same theater the role of Hanbŕ in the drama "Yűzenzome Zashiki Hakkei"; the role of Hanbei's lover Koina was played by Nakamura Karoku I.

11th lunar month of 1816: Sangor˘ performed at the Kitagawa no Shibai in the kaomise program, sharing the stage with Nakamura Utaemon III, Ichikawa Ebijűr˘ I and Nakayama Yoshio I.

1st lunar month of 1817: Sangor˘'s rank in the Kamigata hy˘banki, s˘kanjiku section ("all kanjiku") section, was hakushi-j˘-j˘-kichi (almost unique - superior - superior - excellent). He played at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Mashiba Hisayoshi and Hayakawa Takakage in the drama "Keisei Chikugo-ga-Fuchi".

5th lunar month of 1817: Sangor˘ played at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Jihiz˘ and Shingen in the drama "Honch˘ Nijűshik˘"; the role of Yokoz˘ was played by Nakamura Utaemon III. He also played the role of Yukihira in the drama "Yamatogana Ariwara Keizu".

8th lunar month of 1817: Sangor˘ played the role of Fujiya Izaemon in the drama "Yoshidaya", which was staged in ďsaka in the precinct of the Tenma Tenjin shrine; the role of Izaemon's lover ďgiya Yűgiri was played by Nakayama Yoshio I.

9th lunar month of 1817: Sangor˘ played at the Kita-Shinchi no Shibai (ďsaka) the roles of Shibaroku and Daihanji no Kiyosumi in the drama "Imoseyama Onna Teikin".

11th lunar month of 1817: Sangor˘ played at the Kitagawa no Shibai the roles of Motome and Daihanji no Kiyosumi in the drama "Imoseyama Onna Teikin"; the roles of Sadaka, Hinadori and Koganosuke were played by Nakayama Yoshio I, Nakamura Matsue III and Ichikawa Shik˘ I. He also played the role of Tokiyori in the drama "Onna Hachinoki".

1st lunar month of 1818: Sangor˘ played in the same theater the roles of Takebe Genz˘, Ume˘maru and Terukuni in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami"; the roles of Matsu˘maru and Sakuramaru were played by Kataoka Nizaemon VII and Band˘ Jűtar˘. 3rd lunar month of 1818: Sangor˘ played at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Jihiz˘ and Shingen in the drama "Honch˘ Nijűshik˘"; the role of Yokoz˘ was played by Kataoka Nizaemon VII. He also played the role of Kingy˘ya Kinpachi in the drama "Monogusa Tar˘".

5th lunar month of 1818: Sangor˘ played at the Kita-Shinchi no Shibai (ďsaka) the roles of Nagai Uma-no-Kami Nobuaki and Sazen in the dramas "ďt˘-no-Miya Asahi no Yoroi" and "Ise Ondo Koi no Netaba".

8th lunar month of 1818: Sangor˘ played at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Mori Sanzaemon Yoshinari and Nadaemon in the drama "Hachijin Shugo no Honj˘". He also played the roles of Tokiyori and Kanjűr˘ in the dramas "Onna Hachinoki" and "Suda no Haru Geisha Katagi".

9th lunar month of 1818: Sangor˘ played in the same theater the role of Fujiemon in the drama "Katakiuchi Takane no Taiko".

11th lunar month of 1818: Sangor˘ played at the Kitagawa no Shibai the role of Fujiemon in the drama "Katakiuchi Takane no Taiko". He also played the role of Kanjűr˘ in the drama "Suda no Haru Geisha Katagi"; the roles of Ume no Yoshibŕ and Koume were played by Ichikawa Ebijűr˘ I and Nakamura Matsue III.

He played at the Kado no Shibai the roles of the spirit of the ivy, T˘emon and Nagaoka Shingo in the new year drama "Keisei no Haru Tori". He also played the role of Hanzawa Rokur˘ in the drama "Dan no Ura Kabuto Gunki".

4th lunar month of 1819: Sangor˘ played at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Ishid˘ Umanoj˘, Teraoka Heiemon and Horibe Yajibŕ in the drama "Kanadehon Chűshingura".

5th lunar month of 1819: Sangor˘ played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the roles of Mori Sanzaemon Yoshinari and Got˘ Motohy˘e Masatsugu in the drama "Hachijin Shugo no Honj˘". He also played the role of Tanzaemon in the drama "Heike Nyogo no Shima".

8th lunar month of 1819: Sangor˘ played at the Kado no Shibai the role of Kajiwara Genta Kagesue in the drama "Hirakana Seisuiki".

9th lunar month of 1819: Sangor˘ played at the Kita-Horie Ichi-no-Gawa Shibai (ďsaka) the role of Yoichi in the drama "Wada Gassen Onna Maizuru".

11th lunar month of 1819: Sangor˘ played at the Kitagawa no Shibai the roles of Yoichi and the yakko Bansuke in the dramas "Wada Gassen Onna Maizuru" and "Yoshiwara Saiken no Zu".

1820 ~ 1821: Sangor˘'s popularity declined and his name did not appear on top of the bills in any major theater.

1st lunar month of 1822: Sangor˘ played at the Kado no Shibai the role of Ume˘maru in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami"; the roles of Matsu˘maru and Sakuramaru were played by Band˘ Mitsugor˘ III and Band˘ Jűtar˘.

2nd lunar month of 1823: great shűmei for the Ky˘ya guild; Arashi Sangor˘ III and his son Arashi Umatar˘ I respectively took the names of Arashi Raishi II and Arashi Sangor˘ IV at the Minamigawa no Shibai. Raishi played the roles of Teraoka Heiemon and Kakogawa Honz˘ in the classic "Kanadehon Chűshingura". He also played the roles of Takebe Genz˘, Sukune Tar˘ and Shiratayű in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami".

Spring ~ Winter 1823: tour in Ise.

1st lunar month of 1824: Raishi's rank in the Kamigata hy˘banki, tachiyaku section, was j˘-j˘-kichi (superior - superior - excellent).

1824 ~ 1833: Raishi's name appeared less frequently in the theaters' banzuke.

1st lunar month of 1824: Raishi's rank in the Kamigata hy˘banki was k˘-j˘-j˘-kichi (meritorious - superior - superior - excellent).

11th lunar month of 1826: Raishi performed at the Minamigawa no Shibai in the drama "Hade Kurabe Ise Monogatari".

1st lunar month of 1830: Raishi played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the roles of Bunji and Kenj˘ in the drama "ďshű Adachi-ga-Hara".

1833: Raishi most likely died this year, although his name appeared in the 1834 hy˘banki.

Comments:

Arashi Raishi II was a talented tachiyaku actor and the worthy heir of his amazing father Arashi Sangor˘ II. His forte were wagoto and bud˘goto roles.

Arashi Raishi II's best roles: Fujiya Izaemon, Tadanobu/Yasuke/Koremori ("Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura"), Tabakoya Genshichi/Sakata Kurando Tokiyuki ("Komochi Yamanba"), Kajiwara Genta Kagesue ("Hirakana Seisuiki").
