Before 1804: disciple of Yoshizawa Iroha I, his first stage name was Yoshizawa Tsuchimatsu. He performed as a wakaonnagata in Ôsaka in hama shibai.

1804: he became disciple of Kanô Minshi I and received the name of Kanô San'emon II.

1st lunar month of 1810: he went to Edo and performed at the Moritaza in the drama "Hachijin".

11th lunar month of 1810: San'emon performed at the Moritaza in the kaomise drama "Monomi Guruma Yuki no Takadono".

Summer 1814: San'emon performed in Nagoya.

11th lunar month of 1814: San'emon performed at the Minamigawa no Shibai in the drama "Hôjô Jiraiki".

11th lunar month of 1816: he took the name of Arashi Kanô in Ôsaka at the Naka no Shibai, performing in the drama "Gosho Zakura Horikawa no Youchi".

2nd lunar month of 1820: Kanô played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the role of Tomizawa Jûnai's nyôbô in the new year ni-no-kawari drama "Keisei Ogura no Shikishi"; the role of Tomizawa Jûnai was played by Nakayama Bunshichi III.

3rd lunar month of 1820: Kanô went on tour in Ise with Arashi Kichisaburô II, Nakayama Shinkurô III, Sawamura Kunitarô II and Ôtani Tomoemon II; he performed at the Furuichi no Shibai in the drama "Ômi Genji Senjin Yakata", "Suma no Miyako Genpei Tsutsuji" and "Sekitori Senryô Nobori".

11th lunar month of 1820: Kanô played at the Kita-Horie Ichi-no-Gawa Shibai (Ôsaka) the roles of Takao and Outa in "Meiboku Sendai Hagi".

The same drama was also staged at the Kado no Shibai, creating a competition for the best production between the two theaters.

7th lunar month of 1827: Kanô played at the Kitagawa no Shibai the role of Yamabuki Gozen in the drama "Hirakana Seisuiki". He also played the roles of Hanaguruma and Okura in the osome-hisamatsumono "Osome Hisamatsu".

8th lunar month of 1827: Kanô played in the same theater the roles of Mandokoro and Tsukumo Shinzaemon's nyôbô Shigemachi in the drama "Hakone Reigen Izari no Adauchi". He also played the role of Kisuke's nyôbô in "Keisei Awa no Naruto".

10th lunar month of 1827: Kanô played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Senbagawa's wife Oyotsu in the drama "Sekitori Senryô Nobori".

1st lunar month of 1828: Kanô's rank in the Kamigata hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent) [visual]. He played at the Naka no Shibai the roles of the okugata Sarashina and Hanasakiya Oden in the new year ni-no-kawari drama "Keisei Suô no Dairi".

11th lunar month of 1828: Kanô played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the role of Okinoi in the drama "Meiboku Sendai Hagi".

1st lunar month of 1829: Kanô played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Goheiji's nyôbô in the drama "Shin Usuyuki Monogatari".

9th lunar month of 1829: Kanô performed at the Kado no Shibai in the drama "Matsushita Kaheiji Renga Hyôban"; his stage partners were Nakamura Utaemon III, Kataoka Nizaemon VII, Arashi Rikan II, Ogawa Kichitarô III, Asao Gakujûrô, Nakamura Matsue III, Sawamura Kunitarô II, Arashi Tomisaburô II, Nakayama Bunshichi III and Arashi Raishi II. The same program was staged with the same casting in the 11th lunar month at the Kitagawa no Shibai in Kyôto.

1st lunar month of 1830: Kanô played at the Goryô no Shibai in Ôsaka the roles of Shibaroku's wife and Sadaka in the drama "Imoseyama Onna Teikin". He also played the role of Chôemon's spouse Okinu in the drama "Katsuragawa Renri no Shigarami"; the role of Chôemon was played by Ichikawa Danzô V.

3rd lunar month of 1830: Kanô played at the Kitagawa no Shibai the role of Enju in the drama "Hirakana Seisuiki".

3rd ~ 5th lunar months of 1831: tour in Ise with Kataoka Nizaemon VII, Bandô Hikosaburô IV, Arashi Rikan II, Arashi Tokusaburô III, Fujikawa Tomokichi II, Nakayama Nanshi II and Arashi Sangorô IV. Kanô performed in the dramas "Ise Monogatari", "Sumidagawa Gonichi no Omokage", "Genpei Nunobiki no Taki" and "Satomi Isuke".

7th lunar months of 1831: Kanô played at the Kado no Shibai the role of Kagaribi in the drama "Ômi Genji Senjin Yakata".

9th lunar month of 1831: Kanô played in the same theater the roles of Sekiuchi's nyôbô and Shin'emon's nyôbô in the drama "Chûkô Homare no Futamichi".

11th lunar month of 1831: Kanô played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Yasaku's nyôbô in the kaomise drama "Ôgiya Kazu Shijûshichihon"; the role of Yasaku was played by Asao Gakujûrô.

1st lunar month of 1832: Kanô performed at the Naka no Shibai in the drama "Keisei Hana no Yamazaki", which was produced by Nakamura Tamanosuke and welcomed in Ôsaka the Edo actor Iwai Shijaku I.

2nd lunar month of 1832: the troupe moves to the Kado no Shibai. Kanô played the role of Oyasu in the drama "Junshoku Onna Karigane". The "Gojôbashi" scene of "Ôgiya Kumagai", which was not in the original puppet drama, was added to this drama for the first time and staged in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai; Kanô played the role of Kazusa's wife [more details].

4th lunar month of 1832: Kanô played in the same theater the role of Matasuke's nyôbô in the drama "Tsugiawase Koshiji no Meiboku"; the role of Matasuke was played by Bandô Jutarô I.

11th lunar month of 1833: Kanô played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Fuji-no-Kata in the drama "Ichi-no-Tani Futaba Gunki"; his stage partners were Nakamura Shikan II (Kumagai Jirô Naozane), Nakamura Tomijûrô II (Sagami) and Ichikawa Ebijûrô III (Midaroku).

5th lunar month of 1834: Kanô played at the Kado no Shibai the role of Miura's mother in "Kamakura Sandaiki".

Kanô also played the roles of Wada Yukie's wife Shibagaki and Kôbê's wife Orai in the drama "Igagoe Dôchû Sugoroku".

11th lunar month of 1836: Kanô played at the Kitagawa no Shibai the role of Yodomachi Gozen in the drama "Keisei Chigo-ga-Fuchi".

Comments:

Arashi Kanô was a talented and popular Kamigata onnagata actor, who was active in Ôsaka and Kyôto from the beginning of the 1800s to the beginning of the 1840s. He held the prestigious jô-jô-kichi rank from 1828 to 1842. He excelled in nyôbô and okugata roles. He was also a good fukeoyama in his latter roles.
