11th lunar month of 1782: he started his career in Ôsaka as a disciple of Arashi Sangorô II, receiving the name of Arashi Sanpachi I and playing the roles of Osada Tarô and Kuroda Saemon in the kaomise drama "Zu ni Notta Bankoku Tokai", which was staged at the Naka no Shibai.

9th lunar month of 1783: the play "Igagoe Dôchû Sugoroku" was adapted for Kabuki for the first time, in Ôsaka at the Naka no Shibai; Sanpachi played the roles of Nomorinosuke, Ishidome Busuke and Ja-no-Me no Ganpachi [casting].

5th lunar month of 1784: the play "Katsuragawa Renri no Shigarami", which was originally written in the 10th lunar month of 1776 by Suga Sensuke for the puppet theater, was adapted for Kabuki for the first time by Namiki Gohê, and staged in Ôsaka at the Naka no Shibai; Sanpachi played the role of the decchi Chôkichi [casting].

Fall 1788: Sanpachi went to Kyôto.

11th lunar month of 1788: Sanpachi played at Kameya Kumenojô's theater the role of Osada Tarô in the kaomise drama "Tokiwa Ichô Genji no Kaomise".

1st lunar month of 1789: Sanpachi's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, katakiyaku section, was jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) [visual].

Fall 1791: Sanpachi went to Ôsaka.

11th lunar month of 1791: Sanpachi played at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Dôtetsu and Sumiya Omaru in the kaomise drama "Keisei Shinobazu-ga-Ike".

1st lunar month of 1793: premiere at the Naka no Shibai of the ni-no-kawari drama "Keisei Yanagi Zakura", the first yanagisawa-sôdômono in Kabuki history, written by Tatsuoka Mansaku and Chikamatsu Tokusô; Sanpachi played the roles of Okamoto Hyôgo, Okamoto Gunzô, Echigo no Tasuke and the Yodoya kôshitsu Koyasu [more details].

3rd lunar month of 1795: Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Komochi Yamanba", which was originally written for the puppet theater, was adapted for Kabuki for the first time, in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai; Sanpachi played the role of Kumatake [casting].

Fall 1795: Sanpachi went to Kyôto.

11th lunar month of 1795: Arashi Sanpachi I took the name of Arashi Mitsuemon I at the Minamigawa no Shibai, playing the Kunihei in the kaomise drama "Hajimete Hiraku Nanshi no Hanabusa".

8th lunar month of 1796: Mitsuemon played in the same theater the roles of Mareyo, Sukune Tarô, Fujiwara no Shihei and Shundô Genba in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami".

Fall 1797: Mitsuemon went to Edo.

11th lunar month of 1797: Arashi Mitsuemon I took back the name of Arashi Sanpachi I, playing at the Kiriza the roles of Asahara Hachirô and Gentôta in the kaomise drama "Yuki Onna Keizu no Hachinoki".

1st lunar month of 1798: premiere at the Kiriza of Namiki Gohei I's play "Tomioka Koi no Yamabiraki", commonly called "Ninin Shinbê", in which Sanpachi played the roles of Ukai Kujûrô and Tamaya Shin'emon [casting].

8th lunar month of 1798: Sanpachi played in the same theater the role of Akizuki Daizen in the drama "Shin Usuyuki Monogatari".

Fall 1798: the Ichimuraza reopened, getting back its license from the Kiriza.

11th lunar month of 1798: Sanpachi played at the Ichimuraza three roles in the kaomise drama "Hanayagura Tachibana Keizu".

9th lunar month of 1799: Sanpachi played in the same theater the roles of Kawagoe Shigeyori and Sagami Gorô in the drama "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura".

2nd lunar month of 1800: Namiki Gohei's drama "Gosan no Kiri" was staged for the first time in Edo, at the Ichimuraza in a somewhat different version entitled "Sanmon Gosan no Kiri" instead of "Kinmon Gosan no Kiri"; Sanpachi played the roles of the yakko Yatarô (in reality Junkikan) and Katô Toranosuke Masakiyo [casting].

8th lunar month of 1800: Sanpachi played in the same theater the roles of Kô no Moronô and Ono no Kudayû in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

9th lunar month of 1800: Sanpachi played in the same theater the roles of Mareyo and Sukune Tarô in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami".

11th lunar month of 1800: Sanpachi moved to the reopening Kawarasakiza and played in the kaomise drama "Modoribashi Tsuna-ga-Kaomise".

7th lunar month of 1801: Sanpachi played in the same theater the roles of Emiji and Fukashichi in the drama "Imoseyama Onna Teikin".

9th lunar month of 1801: Sanpachi played in the same theater the role Teraoka Heiemon in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

11th lunar month of 1801: Sanpachi moved to the Ichimuraza and played in the kaomise drama "Otoko Narikeri Onna Masakado", which celebrated the shûmei of Omegawa Kyôjûrô, Matsumoto Kôshirô V and Ichikawa Komazô IV.

5th lunar month of 1802: Sanpachi played in the same theater the roles of Heiemon, Gihei and Kinai in the drama "Taiheiki Chûshin Kôshaku".

11th lunar month of 1802: Sanpachi moved to the Nakamuraza and played in the kaomise drama "Koshiji no Hana Oedo no Torideki".

11th lunar month of 1803: Sanpachi played at the Nakamuraza in the kaomise drama "Kareki-ni Hana Gorishô Hachinoki".

2nd lunar month of 1804: Sanpachi played in the same theater the roles of Ukai Kujûrô and Tamaya Shin'emon in the drama "Ninin Shinbê".

3rd lunar month of 1804: Sanpachi went to Kyôto and played at the Kitagawa no Shibai the roles of Kô no Moronô and Ono no Kudayû in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura". He also played the role of Junkikan in the drama "Kinmon Gosan no Kiri".

11th lunar month of 1804: Sanpachi played at the Kitagawa no Shibai the role of the yakko Tsunehei in the kaomise drama "Ichiyô Ôgi no Kachidoki".

4th lunar month of 1805: Sanpachi went back to Edo to perform at the Nakamuraza.

Fall 1811: Sanpachi went to Kyôto.

11th lunar month of 1811: Sanpachi appeared on stage for the last time, at the Minamigawa no Shibai, playing the role of the nyûdô Ôe in the drama "Ômi Genji Senjin Yakata".

5th day of the 2nd lunar month of 1812 [1]: Sanpachi died.

Comments:

Arashi Sanpachi I was a popular katakiyaku and jitsuaku actor, who was trained in Kamigata but also made a fame for himself in Edo in the middle of the 1790s and the beginning of the 19th century.

[1] The 5th day of the 2nd lunar month of the 9th year of the Bunka era was the 17th of March 1812 in the western calendar.
