Comments: Onoe Shôroku was a talented actor, able to perform a wide range of roles, from katakiyaku to onnagata. His kôseki was said to be outstanding. He spent his latter years in hama shibai, on tour in the countryside or at the Chikugo no Shibai, where he was a mainstay during the 1860s and the beginning of the 1870s. He became a great and popular fukeyaku from the beginning of the Meiji era. He could have been properly considered as the second in the Onoe Shôroku line of actors as it was the case in Nojima Jusaburô"s reference book "Kabuki Jinmei Jiten". However, the 1935 and 2002 shûmei of both Onoe Shôroku II and Onoe Shôroku IV made it clear twice: the Kabuki world definitively considered him as a non-official holder of the name.
