Career:

1833: born in Ôsaka. His father was an inn owner named Debaya Iwamatsu.

1840: he started his career as a disciple of Ichikawa Danzô V, who gave him the name of Ichikawa Danjirô II.

1840s ~ 1860s: Danjirô performed in miyaji shibai. He stopped acting after the death of his master the 6th day of the 6th lunar month of 1845 [1]. He received the patronage of the wife of the owner of the Chikugo no Shibai and was back to the Kabuki world and took the name of Ichikawa Aragorô III in Ôsaka around 1866.

2nd lunar month of 1867: Aragorô went to Edo and he performed at the Nakamuraza in the new year drama "Gohiiki Soga Ichiza no Sakigake".

8th lunar month of 1872: Aragorô played at the Chikugo no Shibai the role of Tôma Saburôemon in the drama "Katakiuchi Tengajaya-mura".

January 1880: Aragorô played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the role of the old boatman Gonshirô in the drama "Hirakana Seisuiki".

October 1881: premiere at the Ebisuza of Katsu Genzô III's drama "Ogasawara Shorei no Oku no Te"; Aragorô played the role of Inugami Hyôbu [casting].

November 1882: Aragorô played at the Kitagawa no Shibai the role of the ferryman Tonbê in "Shinrei Yaguchi no Watashi".

May 1883: Aragorô played at the Ebisuza (Ôsaka) the role of Senoo Tarô in the drama "Heike Nyogo no Shima"; the roles of Shunkan, Tanzaemon, Naritsune and Chidori were played by Jitsukawa Enjaku I, Jitsukawa Enzaburô III, Arashi Rishô II and Arashi Kitsusaburô IV.

May 1884: Aragorô played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the roles of Haji no Hyôe, Shiratayû and Shundô Genba in the classic "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami".

July 1884: Aragorô played at the Fukuiza (Ôsaka) the role of Tsuribune Sabu in the drama "Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami"; the roles of Danshichi Kurobê, Issun Tokubê and Mikawaya Giheiji were played by Arashi Rikan IV, Arashi Kitsusaburô IV and Bandô Tarô.

October 1884: Aragorô played at the Ebisuza (Ôsaka) the role of Tôma Saburôemon in the drama "Tengajaya-mura"; his stage partners were Arashi Rikan IV (Motoemon), Nakamura Ganjirô I (Genjirô), Jitsukawa Enjaku I (Yasuke, Kôemon) and Arashi Kitsusaburô IV (Iori).

January 1885: Aragorô played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the roles of Kô no Moronô, Kakogawa Honzô and Ichimonjiya Saibê in the classic "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

December 1888: Aragorô played at the Asahiza the roles of Kô no Moronô and Kakogawa Honzô in the classic "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

February 1889: Aragorô played at the Asahiza the role of Washizuka Kintôji in the drama "Tamamo-no-Mae Asahi no Tamoto".

November 1890 [2]: Aragorô played at the Bentenza the roles of Kô no Moronô and Yakushiji Jirozaemon in the classic "Kanadehon Chûshingura". He also performed in "Ima Mukashi Aiyado Banashi" and played the role of the ferryman Tonbê in "Shinrei Yaguchi no Watashi".

24 February 1906: Aragorô died.

Ichikawa Aragorô III was a Kamigata katakiyaku actor, who was active from the beginning of the 1840s to the second half of the 1900s. He excelled in roles like Tatara Shindôzaemon in "Imorizake", the ferryman Tonbê in "Shinrei Yaguchi no Watashi" or Ikuta Denpachirô in "Sôzenji Baba no Adauchi".
