Career:

1692 ~ 1721: born and trained in Kyôto as a disciple of Arashi San'emon III, who gave him the name of Arashi Wakano I.

Fall 1721: Wakano went to Edo with Yamamura Ichitarô.

11th lunar month of 1721: Wakano played at the Nakamuraza the role of Chihadamaru in the kaomise drama "Torisaka no Jô Tsuru no Sugomori".

1st lunar month of 1722: Wakano became wakaonnagata and played in the same theater the role of Kewaizaka no Shôshô (Gorô's lover) in the new year sogamono "Ôkamado Akinai Soga"; the role of Soga Gorô Tokimune was played by Ichikawa Danjûrô II.

8th lunar month of 1722: first Kabuki adapatation of Chikamatsu Monzaemon's puppet drama "Shinjû Yoi Gôshin" in Edo, entitled "Hana Môsen Futatsu Haraobi"; the roles of Ochiyo and Hanbê were played by Wakano and Nakamura Shichisaburô II.

11th lunar month of 1722: Wakano performed at the Nakamuraza in the kaomise drama "Hônen Taiheiki".

1st lunar month of 1723: Wakano's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was jô-(shiro)jô (superior - (white) superior) [visual]. He played in the same theater the role of Kewaizaka no Shôshô (Gorô's lover) in the new year sogamono "Soga Koyomi Biraki"; the roles Soga Gorô Tokimune, Soga Jûrô Sukenari and Kudô Saemon Suketsune were played by Ichikawa Danjûrô II, Mimasuya Sukejûrô I and Ogawa Zengorô I.

3rd lunar month of 1723: Wakano's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was two black stroke above jô-(shiro)jô (superior - (white) superior) [visual].

9th lunar month of 1723: Wakano played in the same theater the role of Ono no Komachi in the drama "Wakaura Osana Komachi".

11th lunar month of 1723: Wakano played at the Nakamuraza the role of Kaijumaru in the kaomise drama "Sono Enpô Onna Migyôsho", which celebrated the arrival at the Nakamuraza of the Kamigata actors Yamashita Kinsaku I and Sanogawa Senzô.

1st lunar month of 1724: Wakano's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was jô-jô (superior - superior) [visual].

2nd lunar month of 1724: Wakano played in the same theater the role of the keisei Ôshû in the drama "Keisei Asama-ga-Dake", which commemorated the 16th anniversary (17th memorial service) of the passing away of Nakamura Shichisaburô I.

11th lunar month of 1724: Wakano played at the Nakamuraza the role of Prince Mochihito in the kaomise drama "Taiheiki Okuni Kabuki".

1st lunar month of 1725: Wakano's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was jô-jô-(shiro)hankichi (superior - superior - (white) half excellent) [visual].

11th lunar month of 1725: Wakano played at the Nakamuraza the role of Kachô-no-Mae in the kaomise drama "Oguri Chôseiden" [2].

11th lunar month of 1726: Wakano moved to the Ichimuraza, where he played the role of Hotoke Gozen in the kaomise drama "Hinazuru Tokiwa Genji", which welcomed in Edo the Kamigata actors Arashi Sangorô I and Tsugawa Kamon.

1st lunar month of 1727: Wakano's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) [visual].

11th lunar month of 1727: Wakano fell ill and could not perform in the kaomise program at the Ichimuraza.

1st lunar month of 1728: Wakano was back on stage and he played at the Ichimuraza the role of the mekake Okame in the new year drama "Urashima Tarô Shichise no Mago". This was Wakano's last appearance on stage as he fell ill one more time.

3rd lunar month of 1728: Wakano's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was jô-jô-(shiro)hankichi (superior - superior - (white) half excellent) [visual].

20th day of the 5th lunar month of 1728 [1]: Wakano died in Edo.

Comments:

Arashi Wakano I was a talented wakaonnagata actor, trained in Kyôto but who started to achieve fame for himself during the 1720s in Edo. He unfortunately died too young. He was outstanding in keisei roles.
