Career:

1693: first record in Kabuki chronicles; his stage name was Takashima Kichijûrô.

1697: he performed under the name of Takashima Onoe as a wakaonnagata in Ôsaka at Ôsaka Tazaemon's theater, with the troupe led by Araki Yojibê I; Onoe's stage partners were Kanazawa Goheiji I, Kokon Shinzaemon, Katsuyama Ôhashi, Kamogawa Noshio I, Fujii Hachijûrô, Mihara Jûdayû I, Dekishima Kosaburô, Yamamoto Kantarô, Iwakura Man'emon, Iwamatsu Kizaemon and Takeshima Shichisaburô.

1st lunar month of 1699: Onoe played in Ôsaka the role of Himejiya Ichibê's nyôbô in Tsuuchi Jihê I's new year ni-no-kawari drama "Taisanji Yakushi no Kaichô", which was produced by Iwai Hanshirô I.

Fall 1700: Onoe went to Kyôto.

11th lunar month of 1700: Onoe played at Hayagumo Chôdayû's theater the role of Takasago in the kaomise drama "Daiichi Daiman", which was produced by Yamatoya Jinbê II.

Spring 1701: Onoe's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was (superior) [visual]. He shared the same rank with Asao Jûjirô I, Yamamoto Kamon and Segawa Takenojô I.

1st lunar month of 1701: Onoe played in the same theater the role of Yabase Wadaemon's nyôbô in the new year ni-no-kawari drama "Keisei Sagano no Hara"; his stage partners were Sakata Tôjûrô I, Yamatoya Jinbê II, Yoshizawa Ayame I, Mizuki Tatsunosuke I and Shinozuka Jirozaemon I.

11th lunar month of 1703: Onoe became zamoto and produced at Kameya Kumenojô's theater the kaomise drama "Watamashi Mannengura".

3rd lunar month of 1704: Onoe produced in the same theater the san-no-kawari drama "Keisei Yoakegarasu".

Fall 1704: Onoe went to Edo.

11th lunar month of 1704: Onoe played at the Ichimuraza the role of Fujidayû's daughter in the kaomise drama "Onna Araoka Nishiki no Tazuna".

Spring 1705: Onoe's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was (superior) [visual]. He shared the same rank with Tsutsui Kichijûrô I, Tsugawa Handayû, Iwai Tatsusaburô, Matsumoto Kantarô, Kishida Kogenji and Kojima Heishichi I.

Fall 1707: Onoe went to Kyôto.

11th lunar month of 1707: Onoe performed at Kameya Kumenojô's theater in the kaomise drama "Kobuku Nifukujin".

Fall 1709: Onoe went to Ôsaka.

11th lunar month of 1709: Onoe played the role of Takahashi's daughter Hatsushimo in the kaomise drama "Chigo Daimyô Kyô Miyage", which was produced in Ôsaka by Sakakiyama Shirotarô I.

3rd lunar month of 1710: Onoe's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was (superior) [visual].

11th lunar month of 1715: Onoe became kashagata and performed in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai in the kaomise drama "Saiwai Mochimaru Chôja", which celebrated the shûmei of Iwai Hanshirô III.

Spring 1716: Onoe's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, kashagata section, was jô-(shiro)jô (superior - (white) superior).

11th lunar month of 1716: Onoe performed in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai in the kaomise drama "Maizuru Asahi no Ôdaidokoro", which was produced by Iwai Hanshirô III.

Spring 1717: Onoe's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, kashagata section, was jô-jô (superior - superior) [visual].

11th lunar month of 1717: Onoe played in Ôsaka at the Higashi no Shibai the role of Princess Kame in the kaomise drama "Meryû Oryû Kogane no Uroko", which was produced by Arashi San'emon III. He changed the writing of his first name:

11th lunar month of 1718: Onoe played in Ôsaka at the Higashi no Shibai the role of Ryûzaemon's nyôbô in the kaomise drama "Kogane no Seigaiha", which was produced by Arashi San'emon III. He changed the writing of his first name:

Fall 1721: Onoe went to Kyôto.

11th lunar month of 1721: Onoe played the role of Toyoura at Hayagumo Chôdayû's theater in the kaomise drama "Fuji Asama Taiheiraku", which was coproduced by Wakaura Kinjûrô and Matsumoto Shigemaki.

Spring 1722: Onoe's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, kashagata section, was jô-jô (superior - superior) [visual].

11th lunar month of 1724: he took the name of Onoe Gonbê and played at Hayagumo Chôdayû's theater the role of the widow Keijuin in the kaomise drama "Sanmen Daikoku Mangoku Dawara", which was produced by Mihogi Gizaemon I.

11th lunar month of 1725: Gonbê played at Kameya Kumenojô's theater the role of the widow Myôkakuin in Azuma Sanpachi's kaomise drama "Senzai Gura Sangai Matsu", which was produced by the zamoto Arashi Jûjirô.

11th lunar month of 1727: Gonbê played at Miyako Mandayû's theater the role of a kôshitsu in the kaomise drama "Masu Kagami Eitai Gura", which was produced by Ichiyama Sukegorô I.

Spring 1728: Gonbê's rank in one of the two Kyôto hyôbanki, kashagata section, was jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) [visual].

11th lunar month of 1729: he took the name of Onoe Genji and performed in the kaomise drama "Fukuju Yakata Wagô no Futabashira", which was produced at Kameya Kumenojô's theater by Sakakiyama Shirotarô I.

11th lunar month of 1730: Genji played in Kyôto at Hayagumo Chôdayû's theater the role of Takaemon's mother in Sawamura Bunji's kaomise drama "Inari Yakata Manpô no Kura", which was produced by Arashi Koroku I.

1732: tour in Nagoya; Genji performed as a kashagata at the Nishi no Koji Shibai.

Fall 1732: Genji went back to Kyôto.

11th lunar month of 1732: he took back the name of Onoe Gonbê and performed in Kyôto in the kaomise drama "Hatsu Butai Kogane no Ishizue", which was produced by Anegawa Chiyosaburô I and also celebrated the shûmei of Haruyama Genshichi II and Kirinoya Gonjûrô II.

11th lunar month of 1734: he took back the name of Onoe Genji, performing in Kyôto at Miyako Mandayû's theater in the kaomise drama "Tomi Yakata Kogane no Yaguruma", which was produced by Nakamura Tomijûrô I.

11th lunar month of 1735: Genji appeared on stage for the last time, in Kyôto, where he performed in the kaomise drama "Bankoku Ôshimadai", which was produced by Nakamura Tomijûrô I. No record afterwards.

Comments:

Onoe Genji was a Kamigata kashagata, who was active from the beginning of the 1690s to the middle of the 1730s. In this latter years, he was ranked jô-jô-(shiro)kichi for 9 consecutive seasons in Kyôto (and also in Nagoya in 1732).
